    Bad CPU or Something Else???

    Hi all,

I am having this issue with an old PC that I was trying to resurrect as an "Internet Browsing/Youtube" computer for our house guest and the specs of the PC is Intel Core 2 X6800 + Asus P5Q (Latest BIOS 2209) + 8GB RAM + 240GB SSD.

Installed Windows 10 Pro (1909) just fine and was able to use the computer for about a week so I decided to upgrade the CPU to Quad Core to make it more capable of streaming 1080+ videos. Ordered a used Intel Quad Core Q9400 on eBay and it arrived yesterday so this morning I swapped out the old X6800 to the Q9400.

Booted into BIOS just fine and I was able to do a BIOS reset and reconfigured everything from scratch.
But just when I'm about to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 (USB) the computer will freeze as soon as it reached the "Loading Files..." screen and I had to force restart the computer.

At first I thought it was just a bad USB drive so I tried booting Ubuntu Linux using another USB and the system will again freeze as soon as the system starts loading.

Ran out of ideas so I tried swapping back to the old CPU (X6800) and I successfully installed Windows 10 and was able to boot Ubuntu from USB as well. So I guess the CPU is the culprit right?

Contacted the seller about my issue and he told me that he tested the CPU before sending it out and it was good and since the computer successfully POST'd and was able to get into the BIOS so the problem was with my hardware.

So what do you guys think? Is it a bad CPU or something else?
    Thank you for your inputs...

    :)

    INCORRECT CPU FREQUENCY READING

    Hello Muhammad,

CPU usage depends on the applications that are open to your device. To isolate the problem, we suggest that you answer the following questions:

    • Can you include a screenshot of the CPU reading?
    • Have you tried performing a
      clean boot
      to eliminate software conflicts?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

    Looking forward to your response.

    Bad CPU or Something Else???

CPU / CPU Processor problems / Processor affinity

We appreciate the information you provided. Your processor is working as expected. CPU affinity is only showing CPU (0) since 1 processor is working at the moment. It's very likely that your computer is using a balanced power plan, so we suggest changing
your power plan to High Performance by following these steps:

    • Right-click Start.
    • Click Power Options.
    • Choose High Performance.

In addition to that, we recommend installing the latest updates to keep your system current and secure. Go to
Start > Settings > Update & Security > Check for updates.

Some programs may also be automatically launching whenever you boot your computer, affecting the performance. To disable them, follow these steps:

    • Right-click your taskbar.
    • Click Task Manager.
    • Under the Startup tab, find the programs that you don't need.
    • Right-click the program and choose Disable.

You're also using your computer for a game that was designed to run on an earlier version of Windows, so it's possible that it's slowing down your computer. In this case, use the Compatibility Troubleshooter to find and fix problems with the program using
    these steps:

    • Click Start.
    • Type Troubleshooting and press Enter.
    • Click Run programs made for previous versions of Windows.
    • Click Next.
    • Choose the program from the list and click Next.

Let us know if you need further assistance with your computer.
