Windows 10: Best Anti-Virus?

Discus and support Best Anti-Virus? in AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security to solve the problem; I used to have Malwarebyte (free, so only as an on-demand scanner) but that was before version 3. Since then it's become too much of an AV and hooks... Discussion in 'AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security' started by gettheclicker, Dec 18, 2017.

That's a good tip for Defender - why isn't this option shown on the standard Defender menus?

I used to use Kaspersky antivirus which seemed fine but I've now reverted to Defender plus on demand scanning from Adwcleaner & Malwarebytre Free since my bank no longer offers a free Kaspersky licence.

That's a good tip for Defender - why isn't this option shown on the standard Defender menus? I don't know, I'd have thought it should be available to all. All their documentation shows that Microsoft designed it to be used in the Enterprise environment. But, as I report in post #19 of that tutorial, my testing show it works equally well in all editions including Home.

If it was not for TenForums and the excellent tutorials I wouldn't have known about it either.

To those who wish to use the latest free version of MBAM.

Install the paid for version which gives a free trial period.....this conflicts with Defender, as it is a fully blown AV suite.

Click on Settings, then My Account.....scroll down to Manage My Subscription and deactivate....you are then on latest free version.....this does not conflict

Just to add if you are using Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit-Beta it gets removed when you install the trial Malwarebytes, just need to re-install it, if you revert to the free version.

You may not need to reinstall it though if you have Fall Creators Update. I used to use Microsoft's Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET), but that has now reached end of support. The same exploit protections are now built in to 1709's Defender for all editions including Home.

Microsoft knows how its software works, but doesn't always know how it can get exploited.
A piece of code that works perfectly for many years being exploited, because an outsider succesfully injects malicious code, that's how many of the malware variants work.

Just to throw in my two sense here. Here is what I use and I quite happily like it all.

    ESET Smart Security
    MBAM 3 Preimum
    MS Defender Lite Scanning
    MVPS HOST File
    UBlock Origin (Chrome)

  9. Very true Martijn.

Problems are found by Microsoft and their partners of exploits in their operating systems and programs for years.
I'm sure Windows 10 will have Microsoft Security Updates for years, just like the previous operating systems.
That is why Microsoft has security updates once those exploits are discovered.

The millions of bad guys are always looking for a way to get into Microsoft Windows.
It's a never ending battle trying to stop new found exploits.

My understanding is; Defender is designed to block infection and/or remove them. It does't block the method (exploit) the infection get into the system. That is where Windows Security Update take over to patch the hole (path) the infection got in through.
Of course Microsoft or Defender can't control the person behind the keyboard.
If I have a brain fart and let something in; well that is my fault. Hopefully Defender and or Malwarebytes will be able to clean up my mistake.

Actually, since Windows Defender is part of Windows Defender Security Center (WDSC) and WDSC has App & browser control (exploit protection) since the Fall Creators Update I would say that Windows Defender does have exploit protection.

  11. Recently changed from Panda Cloud (Free) to Bitdefender (Free) and am supremely happy with it. I also use SuperAntiSyware (Free) and the Pro version of Ccleaner.

Have tried most of them over the years; now I rely on Windows Defender solely. It works very well with my system: no performance hits, virus/malware free, daily definition updates

The best antivirus is a mixture of common sense, knowledge, layered protection and many backups.

I've been perfectly happy with WD, also. That, plus always using a VPN seems to present zero problems with malware. I also use Edge Browser, which also has pretty good security measures built in.
