  1. Best Dynamic DNS Client Updater and Dynamic DNS service for hostnames.

Do you guys recommend a DDNS service that will update your own private domain name whenever your ip address changes?

Namecheap seems good. It doesn't appear to make you use one of their domain names or charge you for using your own domain name. Registration seems to be reasonable - about $14 with privacy guard.

And there seems to be free opensource DNS update client updaters that will report IP address changes to NameCheap.

Google also seems to be fair as well.

But I haven't used either NameCheap or Google so I was wondering what you guys are using to update your hostnames when using dynamic DNS.

NameCheap or Google? Or something better?

I liked using OpenDNS but I can't seem to figure out how to update the IP address when using their free DNSomatic service.

    :)

  2. ISP redirects or blocks my search engine

I did not play with my IP as both DNS and IP are dynamic (automatic) but I have tried both with an Open and Google DNS in WIFI adapter settings (in Windows10) but left the WIFI router on automatic DNS as it won't connect to the ISP when I change that DNS
too. All this made no difference, everything works accept www.webcrawler.com

I am not In Manila at the moment so cannot check with a fixed IP, what IP should I try if the ISP is changing the IP constantly (dynamic)?

    Hi there @CerebralFreeze

this should unfreeze the cerebral bit !!!!!

why not do it the easy way (for some) and it's 100% free.

    1) on your HOME computer / server run a job every so often - say every 30 mins or however often you think your ISP changes the ip address and put output in a text file. IPCONFIG is the command you need to run on windows.

    2) send email / text message containing text file.

    Job done !!!!!!!

Not sure how you do it on windows but I'm sure there's an easy way to run a command every so often and then run email.

On Linux run in crontab little job containing command ifconfig piped to a text file. 2nd step run a sendmail command to send it to yourself.

I'm sure that's the only thing these DNS providers do -- any good techies around -- try "Disassembling" / reverse engineering this stuff -- sending an automated e-mail of your IP server address to yourself is hardly "Private proprietary" technology -- any court wouldn't even give it the time of day !!!.

If the server is on cable it's unlikely the IP address will change between boots. Running my solution for a while will show you how often the IP address changes.

With a commercial hosting service (i.e your domain sits on their server) and there's(plenty of really cheap ones around - depending on what you want to do then you don't need this stuff any way as it's all handled by the hosting service own DNS to propagate your domain around the Internet - and you can get free email too from these domains. It all depends on what your needs are.

    Cheers

  6. Jimbo,

I'll take a look into it. So many of these computer tweaks that I want just take up so time!! But if it's simple, I'll give it a try.

I looked into NOIP and DynDNS that someone else suggested in another forum but it's not cheap! It's like $60/year to have your own domain simply point to my network and have my ip updated whenever my ISP changes it. Seems like a total ripoff!

    Hi there
    @CerebralFreeze

Here's a link to get you started -- this is for Windows --I haven't tested it yet but all you need is your IP address so you can access your server -- can't see why all these people are paying 60 USD a year or whatever for what should be an easy free thing already built into Windows. !! Even if this one doesn't work you should get the idea.

  9. Actually, while trying what you suggested, I thought about why not just use OpenVPN to update my domain registrar?

So, I set it up so that my router is my VPN server. Couldn't I just use OpenVPN that's installed on my router to update my registrar with my new IP address?
