    From experience, I and others in the family and in our circles have found 'Eset Nod32' to be the best.. and no bs.. A lot of major institutions, governments, and industries use it.. Eset company seems to be extremely honest, and their program works well and fast, built by ultra-geniuses.. but it costs $...
    I'd avoid everything Russian and China made.. It seems Russia and China is at war with all of humanity.. I've noticed that all Russian softwares and FireFox addons update daily.. There's no valid reasoning nor need for all that spying bs.. Russian stuff is probably forever uploading private files constantly in the guise of updating, is why Kaspersky is a bad choice if you are into pioneering new sciences, inventing, software writing, creative writing, military, and/or serious activism...
    In early Windows days when Kaspersky first came out, it caused a lot of weird spyish problems with Windows OS's.. I believe Kaspersky is espionage software, just like the Russian trani-spies Trump just banned from the military, and like Adobe's perpetual evolving exploit holes, and Disqus's latest corrupt OS killing email attacks...
    A software is probably evil if you can't switch-off automatic updates to update it manually...

    Hi there

    If President Putin / Russian security service or Chinese security service have got enough time and interest to waste on wanting to get into my Computer - I'd actually be Flattered.

    If President Putin wants to see and logon to my computer and sends me a personal email I'll give him my password and he can login and do what ever he wants with it.

    I'm sure after that on ebay my computer would be worth 100,000's of dollars when sold with provenance saying USED BY PRESIDENT PUTIN !!!

    Cheers

    @ jimbo45 Re: "If I were to get Ransomeware"

    I have a solution to that ransomware and hacker thht.. I store everything in 5-external hd's.. I even work on edits in them.. At the end of the day, everything new has gone into an external via flash-drive transferring.. I Never ever connect an external hd to a Windows OS.. I don't know who is in it.. I strongly recommend Toshiba ext hd's, definitely not WD.. I have bumped and knocked and dropped these Toshibas, and they are still running.. When I shut-off the computer, there isn't anything in it that I don't have easily replaceable in the external hd's.. When a computer even hiccups wrongly, I load the few new files, favorites, and bookmarks to a Flash, and in goes the DBAN hd eraser CD, or I hit restore, and everything is back to new in a couple hours.. I restore the OS every month.. This system of backing up with externals is absolutely necessary these days, because when StormVirus soon hits the Net, it will Destroy every net-connected Windows computer in the world in minutes, thereby crashing the whole global economy big-time.. You Cannot recover an OS from a Storm hit.. My PC's were hit 3-times by the evolving StormVirus complex bug.. First thing it does is fill up your screen with duplicates of your firewall's front page till it has used up All the Ram, then shuts it off enough to kick it into blue death screen.. Reboot, if you can, adds three or more deadly viruses to every file opened.. The OS is totally 100% 'burned-toast' if you hadn't ripped out the wall plug the moment the storrm started.. That was over 20-years ago.. Who knows what it is today.. I saved the three hd's as evidence.. If you have the external hd backups, you don't even lose a pixel of your precious treasures, no matter what nasty cyber-evil happens.. You can't trust CD's nor Flash drives as backups.. That's just silly.. If your business depends on your computer data, buy an external hd today.. Don't be sorry...

    I just tried kaspersky. It immediately conflicted with firefox by blocking various websites including google, so I had to uninstall it again.

  7. If you are looking for something simple, try Sophos Free.

    If you have a reliable connection, then a cloud AV like Panda or McAfee.

    For web protection, try Netcraft (blocks phishing/malware) and Poper Blocker (blocks some cryptomining)

    Protection - Disable Web/IM/Mail
    Additional - Network - Disable Inject script/Do not scan encrypted connections

    Hi there
    @Cerawy

    depending on the model it will be found probably in the security section

    Most routers have a web page usually at something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 or whatever depending on your LAN

    Here's where it is on mine

    The Windows Defender, after version 1709, is now one of the best and most robust antivirus you can use. Microsoft has really added a lot of protection in the newest version. It's what I am now using instead of Kaspersky. it's fully integrated into Windows and I never hear from it. I have been computing since 1995 and have an idea on how to browse and how not to browse and this helps. That being said, take a look at the new Defender and what it has to offer.

    @Cerawy:
    By logging into the Netgear router, the default IP for which is http://192.168.1.1 .
    The screen you'd be looking for is 'WAN setup', and you would want that first checkbox 'Disable IPv4 Firewall Protection' to NOT be checked
    (which is the default setting anyway). http://screenshots.portforward.com/r.../WAN_Setup.htm .

    For advanced options:
    You can also selectively block specific services here - http://screenshots.portforward.com/r...k_Services.htm

    Or block devices on your network from accessing specific sites here - http://screenshots.portforward.com/r...lock_Sites.htm

  11. I have had good protection from Webroot, it's got a lite foot print, and it let's your computer move at speed. I keep my browsers clean with Superantispyware, once in a while it catches some adware on my machines too.

    Hi there
    @Cerawy
    You should also block all inbound and outbound ports you aren't using - also UDP ones as well as TCP. Finding open ports is one of the easiest ways Hackers can get into your machine whatever AV program you have installed -- the best protection is to block them from accessing your system in the first place !!!!

    Good thing about doing this in the ROUTER rather than the software firewall is that it stops anything acting before the software firewall detects it and you can get a log of IP addresses etc of where the request came from. The IP address won't always be the "Real one" if people hide themselves via TOR etc but it's a very good starting point.

    Cheers

    I just checked and "Disable IPv4 Firewall Protection" is not checked in my modem. I also have an option called "Disable Port Scan and DoS Protection" which is checked.

    If you wish to harden your system security the main "Guru" that I always used when things were a lot more open on the Internet was Steve Gibson of Gibson Research Corporation

    His SheildsUp! freeware is still available and although the basics of windows security has progressed is still valid, it's available here and can show potential issues with your two way link to the net.

    The site is also still a good browse and listen (podcast) on a Winters evening for self education *Smile

    Yes, that's the default setting. There are others here who are more well versed in the finer details, but my own opinion: uncheck the 'Disable Port scan and DoS Protection' box.
    To quote Jimbo45, "Finding open ports is one of the easiest ways Hackers can get into your machine whatever AV program you have installed -- the best protection is to block them from accessing your system in the first place !!!!" - and the 'Port Scan' would be how they would find the open ports.
