OK, so i can't really decide. Should i go with superantispyware to help me get rid of tracking cookies as well as giving me an extra cleaner against spyware, or should i just go with WD and that's it? What do you guys think?

I would always recommend a Multi-Layer approach, so running WD "Live" at all times plus the occasional complete scan with SAS would meet this criteria.

Once a week should be OK (remember to always check that you have the latest version of the program plus any Definitions files before you scan)

I see. It's tempting to go with superantispyware because the professional version offers realtime protection. However, i cant seem to find a lifetime serial, and im not a big fan of monthly subscriptions.

Does anyone know if you can buy a used lifetime serial for superantispyware somewhere?

They stopped selling them some time ago.

I like the program, but i dont feel like the free version is worth it, and im not a big fan of a monthly/yearly subscription.

Due to the nature of Anti-malware systems I think that you will find that all will be using a subscription model, if they do not already, as they are committed to make changes, (provide updates), on a very short time frame over a very long period.

As for a used licence for a security product, I would strongly advise against trying to find that as you would be opening yourself up to serious potential problems

Of course there is one Anti-Malware/Virus/Anti-RansomeWare system that is not subscription based, indeed is totally free and not crippled in any way, It also gets good reviews by users and independent AV comparors - Microsoft Defender , used with one of the free options for a safety scan once a week and safe surfing practice is as good as anything

In addition to your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware apps, whatever you choose, be sure to BACK UP. That will save you a lot of heartache just in case something bad gets thru. There are several free ones, Macrium and Aoemi being the 2 I like best

Windows Defender is fine, but nothing can completely protect him from his own online behavior.
All the best antivirus software in the world won't protect you!

With that being said, always have full disk encryption in which most people do not have it turned ON.
BitLocker for instance, yes, although its really meant for encrypting data, but also is great for other security measures as well.
Full data disk encryption equates to system integrity.

Encryption is can be a hassle and a pain to enable, and I am willing to bet that is why most users will not turn that feature ON.

Also Secure Boot. That should be enabled as well with UEFI.

Most importantly, keeping all your Windows OS security patches up to date and install programs ONLY you need the most. The less you have installed, the less security holes.

And common sense is the key.

I recently downloaded Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2018 and so far think it's great. There are many good online reviews on the product. I was using WD, and thought it was good, too. But I went ahead with Bitdefender. Couldn't resist because the sale price was so good, just $19.95.

I would not suggest using disk encryption for anti malware purposes as it can slow things down, considerably, and ransomware can still encrypt every file it can access, even if they are already encrypted *Wink

Encryption is a no-brainer when it comes to prevention of loss of data due to hardware theft of a laptop or portable drive. For a business person, government official or armed services personal carrying sensitive data, it's a good idea to encrypt the data as it prevents embarrassment data getting into the wrong hands, when you leave your laptop on a train, or have it stolen

Err - Acronis is not free although some people do get a "free" limited version as part of a package deal but most do not.

I did some research and it seems that this is a feature only available for windows 10 professional.

I'm not sure if i need it.

Googling it seems that it requires a microsoft account, which is something i dont want. If you lose your PC or it gets stolen, the person who gets your PC can still get access to your computer, but you can recover the data by using a key that microsoft gives you, in which case it would problably be easier to back up your data on a usb key.

    Correct me if im wrong?

P.S enabling bitlocker seems to give me a message saying this device cannot use a trusted platform module.

Encryption is needed if you lose your computer or device and it has critical data on it by critical I mean military troop movements critical, not a list of family birthdays.

Of course, Family birthdays are important and so should be backed up, preferably to more than one location including one in a different building as fire and flood protection.

If you wish you can keep an area of your system encrypted to contain banking data but there are other options for this as most attacks will originate online so a firewall and layered anti malware is the best way

I just ran SaS on my old folks PC as i promised to clean it for them.

SaS found 1282 tracking cookies, and nothing else. It hasn't been cleaned for years.

I ran adwcleaner afterwards, which found 5 objects that it removed.

Checking msconfig, i found about 15 programs and services that were set to start with the computer, with most of them being completely uncesseary for the computer to work.

In all honesty, most spyware/antivirus programs seems to do more harm than good. They had AVG installed which let in a ton of nasty stuff on their computer, didn't catch anything and went nuts when i tried to uninstall it.

As i understand it, bitlocker gives you a PIN code you need to get access to your computer, isn't this basically the same as setting as password for your login, or perhaps i misunderstood?
