Windows 10: Best program(s) for protection on Windows 10?

Never tried Auslogics, but like we both know, their are quite a few different ones to choose from. Just got to find one ya like.

 

I agree , i definitely know there are better firewalls , i didn't say Windows firewall was the best firewall , just that i find it does the job for me.

I , however, do not like "Defender" as my AV , lots of people like it and it's light on resources but i prefer to use something else for AV.

 

I find that the Windows Firewall, coupled with the firewall built in to a good router is sufficient. Windows Defender may also be sufficient 99.9% of the time in normal usage but I just don't trust it so I use a third party free product. I guess it has a lot to do with the major problems I encountered using MSE on a Vista machine back when MSE was pretty new. Two times in a row, when there was a product update (not definitions, the product), the upgrade uninstalled the old version and then crashed, leaving no protection at all and not allowing the newer version to be installed. I had to manually delete all the files and folders and clean out the registry entries to be able to install the new MSE version. That just left a bad taste in my mouth since I have never had problems with any other AV I have used. Also, in those days, MSE was very heavy on resources and extremely slow at on demand scanning. I know Defender is now much better but I still can't bring myself to rely on it. Having said all that, in my 16 years of being online and using various AV's (McAfee, Norton for 10 years, Comodo, Avast, Bitdefender, and now Panda, I have never been infected with anything and never been hacked in any way. I enjoy the full Internet experience as well, including social networking, gaming, torrent downloads, flash and java content, etc., always using the latest IE version as my browser. There have been maybe 20 attempts at infection that have always been blocked by whatever AV I was using at the time.

 

I have two running free avast , no problems at all , and one running free Panda . Found Bitdefender not compatible .

 

How do I find the first windows in the guide, for the large download? Only option I can find downloads the 5Mb file that the guide says not to download.

Edited: I setup Avira as the guide suggested and uninstalled the launcher. When you say "you can also prevent avgnt from running at startup" are you referring to Avira system tray application?

 

Yes. You can always launch it on demand, it won't complain. I have confirmation from Avira and my own observations that everything works: real-time protection, product and definitions updates (minus popups). Behavior might change in the future (for the popups, it will be integrated with the notification center) but as long as the services are running, you're safe.

It's not part of the guide, because I consider those little popups a small price to pay by general users for what's offered. Plus, they might find the Internet Security Suite even better. If you already followed the guide, you need to temporarily disable advanced process and registry protection before unchecking that startup item with Autoruns (recommended tool), then revert protection to all items.

My favorite was the post that claimed password protecting an AV would prevent malware from circumventing it. Priceless!

 

Avast Free. You can go into settings and set any pop ups to last only one second reducing their annoyance factor to almost nothing.
Malwarebytes as a backup. All independent labs rate Windows Defender as poor at best.

 

Careful with Auslogics, they like to bundle, accidentally forgot to check custom on and Auslogic install, they put Ask on my computer. Took a couple of hours to find all the Ask files and eventually delete them as it kept trying to hide from me, they're notorious for doing stupid stuff like that.

 

I don't use it myself, but if you had a hard time finding those ask files, then I do have a suggestion. Try using a program called Everything. You type any name you can think of, it will scan all your hard drives and find anything related to the file name you type in. In this case if you would have typed in the word "ask" it would find it no matter where it was and once it does, gives you lots of choices from its menu. Best search program I have EVER seen. And....its FREE
