  1. BitLocker 'Tutorial' Questions

I have been doing some research on protecting personal data, which has led me down a bit of a rabbit hole.

I think I've learned a few things about BitLocker, but wanted to confirm what I've learned.

    I'm running Win10 Pro.

When I go to "Manage BitLocker" in my Control Panel, I see "C:BitLocker on". (I do have a copy of my Recovery Key, saved on the cloud and on paper).

    So, since BitLocker is "on":

    1. If anyone removed my hard drive and plugged it into a different machine, my data would be inaccessible without the 48-digit recovery key
    2. If anyone stole my laptop and tried to wake it up or boot it, they would need either the password or PIN (or a really good mask of my face) to get to my data.
    3. If they enter the wrong PIN a certain number of times, the machine needs to reboot.
How many times is too many? I can't find that anywhere!
    4. If they go through that reboot cycle too many times, the PC is locked until my identity can be verified (how, I'm not sure).

In other words, someone could brute-force their way into my hard drive data, but they'd need to crack my PIN - and they have a limited number (how many?) of chances.

How correct is my summary above? Anyone know the answer to the "How many times is too many?" (phrasing!) question?

    Thanks,

    :)

Need to turn off Bitlocker to install Windows 10

    Hi,

We suggest doing the following steps again to resolve the issue. To complete the procedure, make sure that you have the following information:

    • You must be able to provide administrative credentials.
    • The drive must be BitLocker-protected.
To suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption on an operating system drive, please follow the steps below:

    • Click Start, click Control Panel, click
System and Security, and then click BitLocker Drive Encryption.
    • Click Suspend Protection for the operating system drive.
    • A message is displayed, informing you that your data will not be protected while BitLocker is suspended and asking if you want to suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption.
    • Click Yes to continue and suspend BitLocker on the drive.

Let us know how it goes.
