Windows 10: Black screen with characters on bootup after update

I updated my PC last night, it wasnt a big update or anything and i tried booting it up this morning. It was taking forever to boot so I had the bright idea of restarting it via the power button *Sad. Now its stuck on a black screen after the Acer splash. I don't have any recovery disc/usbs. My PC is an Acer running on windows 10 (originally 7). Any help would be appreciated.

Driver Power State Failure Windows 10

My learning of the black screen has brought the problem to the driver power state failure. Drivers were suggested to be the problem and so, as my last attempt, to fix the problem I applied a program by a microsoft partner to update all the drivers and
had all current. The result is the same with no detectable change. After a complete bootup and normal operating os a normal shut down is completed. Next bootup fails and a notification of a driver power state failure occurred after a period of black screen
completed by a power down. Rebooting produces a normal operating system and after a shut down the sequence is repeated. Reading the history of complaints I find that it was starting with , by operating system, windows 8 and continues today. I can not accept
this as an appropriate operation and would like an explanation of the problem and a solution for correction. It is hard to believe this problem still exists today.

 

Hi, you may be lucky if you use a Win 10 boot disk to boot from (iso's freely downloadable - see Tutorial section or MS media creation tool) and run System Restore from the Advanced Recovery options.

Failing that, you might be able to restore the backup registry having booted from a suitable boot medium.

Before the above you might want to make sure you have backups of any important data (e.g. using a boot disk such as Kyhi's, available from the top of the Software and Apps section.

Note: you have won the grand prize: discovering how invaluable disk imaging is- we strongly and repeatedly recommend disk imaging - e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for the images which then allows you to recover your system to a previously working state relatively quickly, even if you have to replace your disk, and also provides a full backup.

 

None of these suggestions worked. Is there anything else I could try?

 

Have you actually done them? What happened? They are not for the technically faint-hearted, particularly the second.

Somewhere (I can't find it) I read it is possible to uninstall a Windows update from outside Windows - offline. I.e. boot to a command prompt from a boot disk, then uninstall the update.
This gives a clue but you'd need much more specific instructions.

Frankly, I think you're in for a clean install, making sure you've backed up first.

 

Yeah Sry, didn't understand the second one. I'm not quite tech savvy when it comes to all this stuff. I'm not sure I can do this in depth complex (at least to me) fixes. I can follow instructions but I'm not sure how to do too many things you're talking about.

 

If booting from a Win 10 boot medium and trying to run System Restore fails (the first thing you should try as above)
then
you could try restoring the backup registry.

I'm just kinda lost with all this. Ive made a windows 10 bootable USB and tried all the different options on there. I'm not really sure how to restore the backup registry. I could really use a dummy version of all this *Smile

Make sure you have backed up everything.

If you are not familiar with and comfortable with finding your way around basic command prompt commands, to copy the backup registry you need to use a boot disk like Kyhi's from the Software and Apps section.

The easiest option with that is to burn it to a DVD.

Boot from that and you can use file explorer rather than command prompt commands.

Using file explorer identify your Windows disk or partition. It may not be C: - it could be a different drive letter. Let's call it X.

Open folder X:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack

Copy all files you see to X:\Windows\System32\config\

I think you would be best asking a friend who's more conversant with finding their way around these areas.
