Windows 10: black screen with cursor after windows update , cant start in safemode

hi , i put a different drive in the pc and loaded up windows 10 , when i plug the old drive in i see a recovery image , i cant seem to use it though , do i have to convert it ? https://www.dropbox.com/s/sbepjejqpl...%20am.jpg?dl=0

i scanned the old drive with easeUS tools and it found 1568 GB of files so hopefully still got the photos .

Backup any files that you may need on the drive.
If you continue to use the drive you may have unexpected data loss.
If you are able to use Macrium you can make backup images and then get the longest use of the problematic drive.

It is recommended that you replace the drive.

I too have had 2 laptops (Lenovo and HP) go into the dreaded Auto Repair / Fail loop shortly after installing January Windows updates. Coincidence? Maybe.

If the operating system is supported check that SSShim.DLL is present.[/quote] I could not fix the Lenovo, so after a week of failed troubleshooting, I gave up and did a factory restore after extensive hardware tests found no flaws. With the HP, I would really like to run DISM offline, but the above error is preventing me. I guess I'll start a new thread, but thought the recent Windows Updates (particularly any Spectre and/or Meltdown patches) may(?) be relevant to this thread. I wish I had an easy way to pull the drive and diagnose it in another computer.

Hi again , I installed a new ssd in the pc and loaded windows 10 onto it , the bad hd had a "hp all in one recovery image" saved onto to a partition which i have downloaded to the desktop , im not sure if or how i can restore the pc with this image file ?

If this recovery image is a backup of the OS, then you need a USB with HP recovery software to boot from in order to restore the image.

 

i copied the image file to a usb stick , but the pc could not see it when i tried recovery . so i need to put hp recovery manager on the usb stick aswell ?

 

The recovery software is different from the recovery image, you need the hp recovery software on the USB.

The hp recovery software should be able to read the image of your hard drive so you don't need to have the image on your USB.

 

i have the image on the desk top , do i need to save it elsewhere ?

 

The recovery software should be able to access it from anywhere on the disk. No need to move it.
