  1. Black screen with flashing cursor when trying to install.

I've made three attempts to install Windows 10 on my desktop PC with no success. First with the WindowsTechnicalPreview-x64-EN-US.iso and then with my MSDN en_windows_technical_preview_for_enterprise_x64_dvd_5554079.iso. I'm using a 16 GB USB thumb drive. I tried making it with Rufus first and then with the Windows 7 USB DVD download tool. Within seconds of booting from it all I get a black screen with a flashing cursor. The same thumb drive formatted with the USB DVD Download tool boots fine on my ASUS Laptop. I was able to install Windows 10 in UEFI mode with no issues on my laptop. The laptop has UEFI the desktop doesn't. My laptop is fine with an NTFS formatted thumb drive for UEFI installs. Most PC's won't let you do that but my laptop will. Next step is to burn a DVD and try it the old fashioned way I guess. Anybody else with similar issues?

    :)

KB4022716 black screen with flickering cursor after unlocking

KB4025342 didn't fix the issue for me, experiencing black screen and flashing cursor with Dell E5550's and 1703 when undocking.

Did you also need to install the slow ring update KB4034450 too?

  5. The first one I tried was the TechNet Evaluation Center ISO, WindowsTechnicalPreview-x64-EN-US.iso. After that I tried my MSDN ISO, en_windows_technical_preview_for_enterprise_x64_dvd_5554079.iso. I haven't tried doing it with diskpart this time around. I've done it that way before on this PC and it worked. Thumb drives made with Rufus and the Windows 7 DVD download tool work on this PC with Windows 7 and 8, just not 10. This PC doesn't have a UEFI BIOS so the thumb drive doesn't have to be UEFI compatible, or shouldn't have to be anyway. The last one I made with the Windows 7 USB DVD download tool worked just fine on my laptop and gave me the UEFI install option and installed Windows 10. It just won't boot on my desktop PC. I have another desktop with very similar hardware I may test it on. ASUS M2N68-AM SE2 versus M4N68T-M V2.

  6. I just tried my thumb drive on my other desktop PC and it did the same thing, black screen with a flashing cursor. These two PC's have almost identical hardware. This same thumb drive works on my laptop. I've made bootable thumb drives the same way before with Windows 7 and 8 and had no issues using them to install Windows on these two desktops. It looks like Windows 10 does not like my hardware.

Black screen with flashing cursor when trying to install.

This may sound funny, but did you try switching USB ports (front and back)?

This is the Rufus settings that worked for me. I did not actually changed anything there. I am thinking maybe changed something:

  9. Just a thought, do you have an old PS2 mouse and keyboard lying around? May be the wireless mouse and keyboard is breaking the install. Unplug your printer and any other extras and try with a wired basic mouse and keyboard.

  10. I used to have a wireless keyboard and mouse set up and I remember having all kinds of issues whilst installing Windows 7 64 bit so I gave it to my cousin who is more into music production than OS messing.

  11. I didn't have those issues with 8.1, not that I know of anyway. 8.0 maybe though. I had issues with Apps that I think were driver related.

  12. I don't think its a Rufus issue. Thumb drives made with the Windows 7 DVD Download tool don't work either, on my desktop PC's. The same thumb drive does work (is bootable) on my laptop. I installed Windows 10 with it on my laptop.

EDIT: I tried one of the rear USB ports on the second desktop PC.

  13. Black screen with flashing cursor when trying to install.

I used a PS2 keyboard on my Media PC and it didn't make any difference. My wireless Logitech keyboards work just like wired USB keyboards even without installing drivers. I can access the BIOS using them with no issues. As far as the motherboard is concerned they work like a wired USB keyboard. I'm going to go hunt up a blank DVD and burn an install disk and try that.

  14. DVD appears to work. I can boot from it and I went as far as language selection screen. My back is sore so I'll put the full install off for now. I may not tackle it till tomorrow some time. It's still a mystery to me why the thumb drives don't work though? I may try on more time and make one manually with diskpart.

  15. Installed fine from the DVD, took a long long time though. Painfully slow. It may have been a wasted effort though, no sound. No working driver for my VIA onboard audio either. Windows doesn't even see the onboard sound so it won't look for a driver. It's MIA in device manager. It was the same deal in Windows 8.1 but I had a driver I could install manually that worked. This driver won't work in Windows 10. v10_1200a for VIA VT1708S. When I run it ,it reports no HD device found. The VIA site is hateful for actually trying to find a download.
