Windows 10: Black Screen

When the computer is on and in sleep mode and I try to bring up the screen, nothing happens. The screen stays black. The only way I can manage to get back on-line is to shut down from the power button on the side of my computer; then turn it on again and log on. This happens all the time. I am concerned that I may be damaging my computer by constantly shutting down and turning back on each time I wish to be on line.
