Blank screen + cursor after instelling new graphics card / Windows 10

    Hello,

I have been experiencing problems with Windows 10 ever since I've installed a new graphics card: the MSI Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti. It worked well the very first time. But rebooting gives me a blank screen. I have been able to enter the system once (by clicking the spacebar and entering my password blindly but that does not seem to work anymore) to try and update the driver that came with it. I wasn't able to as I first needed to uninstall the previous one, which required a reboot. I was also able to check under Device Manager / Display Adapters to disable the shared Intel Monitor and enable the GeForce card. As confirming these new settings also required a reboot, I decided rebooting was probably the best option. I should have known better. I'm back to my blank screen and nothing seems to work. I have tried F2, F8, F10, F12, Windows + P + down arrow twice, spacebar, and Ctrl.

Would any of you know how to reboot and enter the system? And what to do next?

    Thank you.

    :)

Let's see what would be the result after updating your graphics card driver and installing the latest Windows 10 Update. We're just here if you need further help.

    Hi Matthew,

This could an issue with your graphics driver. For us to effectively assist you, kindly provide us the information we need below:

    • Aside from updating, have you made any significant changes to your computer that could have triggered the issue?
    • What is the make and model of your graphics card?
    • Have you checked if there are any pending updates for Windows 10?
    • To remove any possibilities of unsuccessful updates, are you using any third-party antivirus programs? If yes, have you tried to disable them and check for necessary updates?
    • Just to clarify, after you log in, are you able to see the icons on our desktop? Or you are only able to see your mouse cursor? We would appreciate if you can attach a screenshot for us to look into that further for you.
    • Are you receiving any error messages when accessing Task Manager? If yes, tell us the exact error message.

We are looking forward to your response.

Possibility the card is faulty. Try reseating the card again and the 6pin Power connector. What Wattage PSU ? Do you get the Manufacturer's logo screen at boot ? What are you using to the monitor HDMI, DVI ? Check that also by swapping cables.

The card did not come with a Power connector slot. I'm not sure about the Wattage - where can I find that piece of information. I can see the HP logo when I reboot, just before it goes to blank. Not MSI (graphics card) though. I'm using the traditional monitor cable, not sure whether I can swop?
After trying many times, I have now been able to boot pressing Esc while rebooting until I got to the blank screen with the cursor. I pressed spacebar and entered my password to a blank screen. So the PC is running now with the graphics card but I'm not sure what to do and I fear that it might go to blank again if I switch it off for the night and restant in the morning.

I hope that you can give me some useful tips as I'm not very techsavvy myself (as you might have guessed).
    Thank you.

O.k. said was an MSI card or not, although does not matter it is a NVIDIA Chipset in it, so drivers would be from NVIDIA. Many models of this HP P6 2000 can you give the exact model, i believe may have a 300W Power supply. This card has other monitor connectors on it,HDMI,DVI. Like to check the specs on this model if you can provide exact one. When you buy a Video card need to make sure your system is compatible with it and supplies enough power and has the right PCI-E connection. Card did show it had a power connection on it, 6 pin connection to the power supply.

Do not need to disable other integrated graphics if this system had it, will do this when you connect another card.
Wondering if we can get into Safe mode to check to.

These are the systems specs of video card and pc:
MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB OC - Specificaties - Tweakers
HP Pavilion p6-2000be Desktop PC Product Specifications | HP® Customer Support

    I have also found 300 W.
So the card looks compatible to me, but it might not be with Windows 10?
I checked the Device Manager: it says the card works well. I have also updated the driver in the Device Manager panel. Obviously, it wants me to reboot now (not sure whether that is such a good idea...)
    Thanks for now!

300W is a minimum for this card, this card is a PCI-E 3.0 x 16 but is backwards compatible with your PC connector.
I truthfully would not update the driver through windows update, choose correct Operating system bit 32 or 64 bit here and download it. Driver version is 361.43
    Download Drivers | NVIDIA

Chances can be a driver issue. Since already did it through Device manager it will change once you shutdown or reboot.
Can try to uninstall it in device manager and use generic windows drivers and may work, then download this one and install it.
Choose custom install from software driver ans select perform a clean install.

Other thoughts were you able to get into safe mode and do it there to and to see how it works there to.

Thank you, CountMike. I will try that. Is it important to do it in safe mode only?
And do I then install the new driver in safe mode as well?

Yes, it works only in safe mode. If you use it from normal mode it will bring you to safe mode automatically.
There are couple of other things you can try.
In MSCONFIG, there is also Diagnostic Startup that loads only basic devices and "Base video" under Boot tab. It should default to 800 x 640 resolution but give enough of the picture to work on the system.

This is an update of my progress so far.
I have managed to go into safe mode (once), uninstall all NVidia driver remnants using Display Driver Uninstaller and reinstall Driver 361.43. Once I get past the hurdle of booting the system, everything works fine using the new graphics card.
Booting is still an issue. I seem to be able to manage to trick my pc each time by pressing Esc before I boot, holding it down until I get to the blank screen + cursor, then pressing the space bar and entering my password. So I was wondering whether this might be a problem of boot order. However, I haven't managed to get into the Bios. I have tried a number of key combinations including shift+switch off and F2 or F10 when rebooting, but to no avail. If anyone has any suggestions about how to get into the BIOS on an HP P6-2000be computer, so that I can try to find an option to either disable the integrated GPU or change boot order, they would be more than welcome.
As an alternative option, I was wondering whether there are any counterindications for doing what I do now (= tricking the system to start up)?
    Thanks for your help.

Blank screen + cursor after instelling new graphics card / Windows 10

BIOS i do not see how on support page or manual, each PC are different on how HP logo screen if shown will sometimes tell you, can be either Delete key, F8, F9,F10,F12 i am not sure. Thought you did disable the integrated card. I would not try changing the boot order then will not be able to boot. I would take out that bought card as a test and try booting just to see if it is faulty in any way and will be using the integrated card then.

Either a power issue, a faulty card or incompatibility with something if it works with the integrated card.

I did take out the add-on card and the computer booted without any problem. There must be a conflict somewhere.
And indeed, the integrated card is disabled in Device Manager.

O.k. well disabled in the device manager is not an issue, unable to get in BIOS and renable if it was disabled there for you would be then.
Chance your 300W power supply is not enough for card or the card is faulty or not compatible with the slot. Although should be backwards compatible with your PCI-E 16x slot. Just have to reinstall the driver for integrated and enable it
