Windows 10: Blank screen with mouse cursor after login

Thanks Ed. You know, I really like this site and everyone for the support. I have and continue to learn things that I don't learn in classes at school. I'm a student in computers and networks. Thank you for what you and everyone does to help folks like me.

Just to update:

I spoke with my friend who the laptop belong to and explained that it would be best to just do a clean install and start off with a clean system. We can reload the few apps that she had. All data was retrieved via connecting hdd to another PC. In the discussion I told her that I will make sure 10 is fully updated. That is when she told me that the laptop was shutdown during an update installation and then her issue began. My fault for no asking the right questions. Well there ya go!! She now knows what not to do. All is well in the land of OZ.
