So I just used the Windows 10 Upgrade tool to find and install the latest May update for my desktop since the Settings app couldn't find any updates and now I'm getting this error on boot-up (after it seemingly finished the update). I searched the specific file that's broken/corrupt/missing and all I could find was info for Windows 7/8. Also, this boot manager seems like the one for Windows 7, even though I installed Windows 10 on this desktop years ago (but never clean installed). There's also a few Windows boot manager entries in my BIOS, but I didn't change anything between the update and coming to this error. There was only one before.

I'm trying to use the media creation tool with a USB stick to restore but it's now saying "It looks like you started an upgrade and booted from installation media. If you want to continue with the upgrade, remove the media from your PC and click Yes. If you want to perform a clean installation instead, click No."

So I clicked yes, removed the media and it attempts to "recover my PC" and undo changes, but it just leads back to the error below after about 5 minutes. I'm trying to use the Startup repair with a Windows 10 recovery USB I just flashed, but it fails immediately and takes me back to the advanced settings menu.

bootrec /ScanOs doesn't even report my C drive as a Windows installation, it says my D drive (which has data, not an OS disk) is the only Windows installation for some reason. Currently running chkdsk C: /f /x /r, got about 12 minutes left on that.

Any tips would be appreciated, there's not even an option to reinstall Windows from the recovery advanced options menu within the USB stick.

That's really odd. I get no ESENT errors in Home upgraded to 2004.....

How to get the Windows 10 May 2020 Update version 2004

I presume the total absence of any tiles is your personal choice, as is removing the Search, Cortana and TaskView icons from the task bar. Seems you are a minimalist. Not my style, but I'll respect your choice.

You link definitely shows the Start, there's no doubt because on the left it includes the power button, a user icon, etc. but it doesn't show the All apps list as your 1909 screenshot does. This lack of an All apps list in your 2004 could be explained by turning off 'Show apps list in Start menu' in Personalization > Start. But that is not the case in your link, if it were there would be three icons at the top left of Start (the 3rd will show the All apps list). But yours has just the one icon, meaning that the All apps list should be displayed already. Here I show how that looks in 2004, first without the All apps list, them with.

What appear to be happening is that Search that is appearing on the Start menu on top of the All apps list. Now there is no setting provided by MS to make Search appear on Start, but there is in third-part apps such as Classic Shell or Open Shell. Do you have one of those installed?

Whatever the problem is, it is definitely this Search box (minimalist again, everything turned off except Top apps) you are seeing as a part of Start. How it got put there seems unique to your system, but it's not any setting MS offers (or would have changed in the 2004 upgrade) that has done this.
