    Boot Problem

Not sure where to put this, since it's not a BSOD, but it is very, very annoying.

I installed Windows 10 and began updating various things as one does with a new install. Drivers, apps etc,... at some point I began having a boot issue. Everytime I restart (Start Menu>Power>Restart), the computer begins it's BIOS checks, kicks into AHCI listing and then right after "Verifying DMI Pool Data" throws up and error; "Error loading operating system". Pressing ctrl + alt + delete reboots the system and this second time, everything loads fine.

This is consistent behavior, every single time I need to restart for some reason or other. Sometimes for app updates, sometimes just because,... the reason for the reboot doesn't seem to matter. This happens whether I run in AHCI or Native IDE mode,...

Any suggestions or insights would be most helpful.

    :)

    Windows 10 Product Key Blocked

    I had the same thing.

I did the Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 upgrade and activated Windows 10 successfully. I then downloaded the media creation kit, created a bootable USB and did a fresh installation of Windows 10. This second installation would not activate and told me the key
    had been blocked.

I spent about two hours on the phone to Microsoft who failed to get it activated. It's been escalated to their tier III support and I'm getting a call back this evening. I'll come back here and report how I got on.

Yup, been through all of that. Have done everything except reinstall Windows 10. Problem persists.

Just finished a clean install. Drive formatted, Windows 10 install fresh from the downloaded .iso. Nothing else installed except for the necessary hardware drivers, and not many of those since Windows recognized and install almost everything on its own. Problem persists. Upon reboot, after drive and AHCI enumeration, "Error Booting from operating system". ctrl+alt+dlte reboot from there, everything loads fine.

Am running sfc /scannow to see if anything is amiss. Reason for clean install was that sfc found corrupted files before and said it couldn't repair them.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'm all ears.

ETA; SFC Just finished. No violations or corruptions.

Sounds like a problem with your hardware. Disk, memory or motherboard/BIOS.

    Boot Problem

All three functioned flawlessly under Win7. This problem DID NOT occur until I upgraded to Win10.

All reboots updates, S&G's, cold boots or any other reason under 7 went by the numbers.

Also: the size, make, model, capacity etc of all mentioned hardware is recognized and fully used under 10. Meaning I don't get any errors or warnings that certain hardware isn't found or accessible, or is of lesser capacity than it should be.

S.M.A.R.T. says my hd is fine, so does chkdisk.

This issue is pretty much always due to either a corrupted boot sector/HDD, BIOS configuration or faulty hardware.

Check your BIOS settings are correct, check the disk cables, swap the memory modules around and check the boot sector.

Yeah, I would agree it's probably not your hardware. I am running a dual boot win 7/win 10 insider situation (latest build 10240). Shortly after the RTM was released, I had to deal with the chkdisk warning regardless of which system I booted to on every boot up, yet performing the complete analyses showed no problems. I ended up making win7 my default boot OS, with the win7 boot manager screen instead of win 10. After a couple of boots like that, it went away.

I know it's not a solution, but maybe a clue, or at least a sanity check.

After resetting the BIOS to 'optimized defaults' it SEEMS to have been fixed. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is/was. As I said, system ran flawless under Windows 7. We'll see next time I need to reboot if it's truly fixed or not. If it is, I'll come back and mark the thread solved.

    Thanks for the info/advice.

Ok, 24 hours and 3 restarts later, it seems to be fixed now. Whatever setting it was, I still don't know, resetting the BIOS to 'Optimized Defaults' and then resetting my boot order how I like it, seems to have fixed the issue.

No halted boot ups or boot errors since,... marking as solved.

Good job. It was more than likely one, or more, of your hard disk configuration settings.

Please forgive my ignorance. I too upgraded fromwin 7 to 10, and then did a clean install. Can never RESTART without freeze/disk errors etc. How do I reset the BIOS to optimise defaults - my F2 key in startup takes me to BIOS - then what do I do? Thanks.
