  1. bootrec.dll is corrupt, System restore failed to extract

    Hi,

I have an infinite repair loop in my Windows 10.0.17134.1 laptop,

    1. Firstly it says "Automatic Repair couldn't repair your pc.

    Logfile: D:/......... Some path/Srt/SrtTrail.txt

    2. I went to troubleshoot > advanced > cmd, and opened the log file, it says,

    Root cause found:

Boot critical file: D:/efi/Microsoft/boot/resources/custom/bootres.dll is corrupt.

    Repair action: File repair

    Result: failed, error 0x4005

    3. I tried to 'Reset this PC' - Keep my files, it says

There was a problem resetting this pc. No changes were made.

    4. I tried to do system restore.

    It says,

You must enable system protection on this drive,.

    5. I tried to enter safe mode by pressing F8. But automatic repair is still coming.

    6. In cmd, I entered "rstrui.exe /offline:c:". Now It does not tell me to enable to enable system protection. But it says that

System restore failed to extract the file (D:/program files x86/avg/antivirus/setup/crt/data/avg.vc140.mfc/x86/avg.vc140.mfc.cat) from the restore point. The restore point Was damaged or was deleted during the restore.

    Any help?

    :)

Thanks, Pedro. SFC shows no corruption. What files could be corrupt that that SFC would not discover and that would cause system restore to fail to extract the same file from multiple restore points?

System Restore - System restore failed to extract the file ...... (0x8007005) error

    Hi Loucille,

One of the possible reasons why the error code 0x8007005 occurs when performing system restore is due to corrupted system files that caused software conflicts. Since you have tried several steps to resolve the issue, we recommend that you
perform a System Restore in safe mode. To boot your device in
safe mode kindly click on this link. This will start Windows in a basic state, using a limited
    set of files and drivers.

Once done, we suggest that you perform a system restore after booting in safe mode. System Restore will be able to revert your PC or laptop to their previous state, which can be used to repair and recover system malfunctions or issues. Restoring won’t affect
your personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was made. To do this, follow the steps below:

    • Right-click the Start button, and then select Control Panel.
    • Search Control Panel for Recovery.
    • Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.
    • Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver, or update, and then select Next > Finish.

If in case that the issue persists, we suggest that you run the System File Checker tool. This will be able
to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore it. We also suggest that you run the DISM command to repair the Windows image on your system. Follow the steps provided
on this link for the complete guide on how to use
    the tool.

Please post back with the result.

  4. bootrec.dll is corrupt, System restore failed to extract

"System Restore failed to extract the file (...\OneDrive) from the restore point."

Hi, Pedro. Am I correct that if restore cannot extract the same OneDrive file from any of a half-dozen restore points, then there must be corruption on the disk that contains the restore points. Is that your reasoning? I've done chkdsk on that drive with
no errors found. If a half-dozen restore points were all corrupted why would it just fail to extract that same file every time? Please explain what you think is happening that leads to this error.

Another observation, which appears related (either as a cause or an effect of the problem that causes system restore to fail) is that the OneDrive icon in the systray appears to be perpetually syncing. If the local OneDrive file were corrupted during the
upgrade to 1803, would that cause the observed problem with system restore?
