Botched an MBR fix, now computer thinks C drive contains win 10 and D drive contains win 7

    Here's what happened:

The computer had an SSD C drive and a HDD D drive. The SSD contained Windows 10, upgraded from windows 7. The HDD contained a bunch of files.

I installed a new SSD alongside the existing drives, but the computer would not boot. I didn't know this at the time, but it's because the original SSD C Drive got unplugged during the process. I used a Microsoft Repair USB and ran some commands in an attempt to fix the boot issue. The commands I ran were:

    bootrec /fixmbr

    bootrec /scanos

    bootrec /fixboot

    bootrec /RebuildBcd

One of the commands failed due to "access denied" I think it was /fixmbr. Anyway, I discovered that the original SSD was unplugged and plugged it back in. For some reason, the computer reverted to Windows 7 and kept trying to boot into Windows 7. I ended up reinstalling Windows 10 on the original SSD, which at least allowed me to boot.

When I boot now, however, Windows pauses and asks me to choose between Windows 10 C drive and Windows 7 D drive. The problem is that choosing Windows 7 does nothing computer freezes up, since there is not actually a Windows 7 installation on the D drive.

What can I do to solve this problem?

I would like to boot straight into Windows 10 with no prompt. I think I botched the MBR somehow, and the D drive has a record that it shouldn't.

    :)

  2. Win 10 Parallel Installation - Win 8.1 in C: Drive & Win 10 in D: Drive

    Hi,

I have subscribed to auto upgrate on 29th July. Currently in my laptop Win 8.1 is on C: Drive.

    1. Will I have a choice to install the Win 10 on E: Drive? I don't want to touch C: drive at-all.

    2. Will the installation steps ask me what customized applications are needed to be installed?

    3. The WiFi connection settings are fixed and passwords are all stored with Win 8.1; If the installation does not happen in the E: Dirve, will my setting be deleted in C: Drive?

    4. If the installation does not happen in E drive, do I need to remove all my data from C drive to other drive?

    Thanks

Win 7 and Win 10 on network

I have home network with separate modem, router, and WAP's. My Windows 7 computer does NOT list the Windows 10 computers on network computer list but the Windows 10 computers network list DO list the Windows 7 computer.

Turned off firewalls, gave permissions, shared drives. Nothing allows Win 7 computer to access the Win 10 computers.

    Any suggestions for a fix?

new win 10 dual drive pc - D:\ is not shown

    Hi

    1st - I have a new win 10 pc - HP Envy came installed with a1T hd (D:\) and a 128G ssd (C:\).

Clicking 'file explorer', 'This pc' does not show the D drive. After reading posts went to 'device manager' the D drive is not shown under 'disk drives' as described but under 'portable devices'. Did a right click on it and it says 'device working'. Went
to 'disk management', it shows a Disk 0 (C:\ ?) and a Disk 1 (D:\ ?) as 'unallocated'. I've read posts suggesting changing the drive letter D to something else as a fix - but I would rather keep the drive designated D as it is now. Other posts said to right
click the 'unallocated'. I did that and was asked to format the drive. At that point I stopped, I'm sure the drive already came formatted and thought this might be an error ( didn't want to cause more problems ).

2 Questions - Should I have continued? Also, there was a single option to click 'single volume', if clicked, would that prevent future partitioning of the drive?

2nd - In 'this pc' it lists a single USB drive twice when plugged in. Is this the way it should be or is it an error? My old win 7 didn't do that. How to fix it?

Prior to all this I've had a couple of issues and ended up doing a clean install of win 10 - might this have caused the problem(s) ?

thx in advance - all help is appreciated,
