Windows 10: broke the Xbox Game Pass app

TL;DR: Xbox Game Pass app isn't opening and I can't reinstall it to try fix it.


I know Halloween is over, but please listen to my long and sordid tale of horror.


It all started one rainy day when I replaced a couple of my old HDDs with a brand new SSD. I cloned one HDD into the SSD and then formatted both of the old HDDs before removing them.


I first noticed something was off when Flight Simulator tried to update but it kept failing. I realized quite a few Microsoft Store apps had some issues, because they had been installed on the HDD that I hadn't cloned. Reinstalling the apps fixed it, but Flight Simulator still had the same issue.

After some investigation I decided to go to the registry and export

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Appx\PackageVolumes

before deleting volumes 2 to 4. removing volumes referring to HDDs that didn't exist anymore as well as the one that was having problems with Flight Sim. That didn't quite fix it, but installing one further Game Pass game, set up the volume information again and also fixed the Flight Sim issues. It created volume 5, instead of a new volume 2. In hindsight, I should have looked into that


Everything was fine until one day windows started with the error message:


The XBox app wouldn't open anymore the xbox companion app for example did though. Also for some reason the Whatsapp app won't open either.
Pressing install again seems to not really do anything, uninstalling isn't possible error code 0x80073cfa. Same with Whatsapp.


I tried using Powershell to remove everything xbox, which worked except for XboxGameCallableUI. That seems to have solved the issue with the error message on startup, but the XBox app still thinks it's installed/is installed, but doesn't open.


And that's where I'm at. All I want is to remove the app and install it from scratch. It would be nice to also be able to clean up the games that were apparently on the HDD that no longer exists, but for now my focus is the XBox app itself.
