Brother Printer Non-Functional in Windows 10

I am working with a client who has a Brother MFC-5890CN, I'm migrating him from Windows XP to Windows 10. His printer works perfectly on his XP machine but so far I can't get it to work at all under 10. Explorer.exe throws an error picture below when I attempt to open its printer properties. After I click 'Ok' on that a warning dialogue comes up saying not all the drivers are installed for the printer. Selecting the option to install additional drivers takes me through windows update which concludes that the drivers for the printer are the most up to date, and does nothing. Ignoring the warning brings up the printer properties. Attempting to print a test page crashes explorer completely, instantly.

What I have already done to attempt to fix the problem:

    - Updated up to 2004 the latest update at the time for the patch that is supppsed to correct print problems in Windows 10

    - Uninstalled and re-installed Brother's official drivers.

    - Uninstalled and ONLY installed Windows generic drivers explorer error still appears

    - Removed and reinstalled the print spooler

    - Uninstalled printer and removed its entry from the registry, then re-installed official drivers

    - Contacted Brother with error details and was directed to contact an IT or Windows specialist - frustrating!

A couple things I feel may be suspect:

    - It's an older device, Brother's latest drivers are meant for Windows 8.

    - I did not set up the computer myself, so this is not a fresh windows environment - I don't know what other pre-installed factors may be involved.

Any suggestions? I've seen one or two articles with error messages like this, most suggested some method of reinstalling drivers.

Brother Printer exists & works, but won't "Install" - Why?

Gang I have really appreciated how Windows 10 can pickup devices on the network and get them working without the user even knowing what happened. Saves steps. With multifunction printers, however, it is better in some cases to run the Manufacturers software stack for key important key features, in this case scanning multiple pages into one PDF. I have not seen a case like this one: The Device, a Brother MFC-L2707dw, is working - windows dropped it into Devices & Printers with no intervention, both by USB, and later by WIFI. The basic functions work. It will print, scan, and copy. But all not well.

The info on the printer is not populated other than the basic ID: it gets the model correct, all other information missing in Windows Devices & Printers. Most importantly, in trying to install either the Basic Drivers package or the Full Features package from Brother [they only list those two in Downloads for Windows 10], I have to quit the install because it cannot detect the printer. Fails when connected by USB, and fails when connected only by WIFI [and the printer works on WIFI as well as USB]. Similarly, if I delete the Printer and then use the "Add Printer" in Windows Control Panel, Windows 10 cannot discover the device. [but it does... just not the prescribed way]

I have not tried this in Safe Mode - I assumed drivers would be squelched and the package would fail again.

    Anyone have a suggestion here?

Windows 10 Home Won't Print to Remote Printer

    I have three computers.
Machine 1: Windows 10 pro, has the USB Brother HL-5040 printer
Machine 2: Windows 10 pro, prints OK to the remote printer.
Machine 3: Windows 10 home, Used to print, but not anymore (THIS IS THE PROBLEM).
I’ve tried everything that I can think of, and would appreciate any suggestions.
I did these steps on Machine 3 that did not work.

    1. Remove the printer device.
    2. Add a Printer
    3. The printer that I want isn’t listed
    4. Select a shared printer by name
    5. Browse
    6. Select the displayed Machine 1.
    7. Select the displayed Printer.
    8. Next
    9. Failure “Connect to Printer”.
    10. Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or Hostname
    11. Next
    12. Set Hostname to Machine 2, and set port name.
    13. Detecting TCP/IP Port
    14. Additional Port information required.
    15. Device Type – Standard, Brother Port Server
    16. Next
    17. Detecting the Driver Model
    18. Install The Print Driver
    19. Select Brother and Brother HL-5040
    20. Next
    21. Replace the Current Driver
    22. Printer Name (setting it to HL-5040)
    23. Next
    24. Do not share this printer
    25. Next
    26. You’ve successfully added “HL-5040”
    27. Finish
Printing on Machine 3 puts the document in the print queue, which reports error printing.
Printing from Machine 2 to the printer on Machine 1 works perfectly.
All three machines are in the same HomeGroup. Machine 3 can access the shared files from Machine 1.

Brother Printer Non-Functional in Windows 10

Can't Access networked Brother Laser printer- To print or use Web I/f

Not all Printer drivers are included in the installation media. Even mine (Brother HL-4040CN), you would need to manually add it to the list:

    1. Control Panel->Devices and Printers->Add a Printer
    2. Follow the steps to set up a network printer. At one point, Windows will search for available printer, click on "The printer that I want isn't listed"
    3. Click on "Windows Updates". Windows will start downloading a complete list of Printers.
    4. Select your printer name & model then install.

EDIT: Just tried to install as a USB printer for MFC-7820N since I don't have this printer to set up as a network printer. The result as shown in the list after clicking on "Windows Update":
