Windows 10: Browser, File Explorer stuck in refresh loop - Help!

I've got an Asus X205TA running windows 10.

Without indication or warning, stuff starts refreshing. Web pages ocassionally refresh on their own, even when I am in the middle of something. Sometimes they get stuck in a refresh loop, and the right/left click stops working (trackpad still registers movement, just no clicks) The little refresh circle spins, and even if the page loads completely, it almost immediately starts refreshing again. I have to hit Control+W to shortcut exit out of the tab, then Control+Shift+T to reopen.

Other times, only the mouse click stops working. I can still navigate with shortcuts, two finger taps (for right click) and the enter/tab keys.

Often these workarounds do the job, but sometimes only a reboot gets it back to working condition.

I've tried 5 different browsers - IE, Edge, Vivaldi, Chrome, and FF. Same issues on all of them.
The issue also pops up (but less frequently) in file explorer. Pages get stuck in a refresh loop just like the browser. This leads me to believe it is not a browser specific problem.

It has been annoying for the past two weeks, but now it is just unbearable.

File Explorer has gone crazy after last nights upgrade.

My only has icons instead of full descriptions. I can not get back to a point where I have tabs that actually say something. Please tell me how to get my view repaired? help... Help.... HELP!!!

Hi Ian,

I think that was the problem. In addition, a registry check was performed which showed a couple of errors.

After a reboot to clean the errors the computer did not load. The only way to fix the PC was to restore the system to the default state.I will keep your tip in mind just case it happens in the future again my PC is going faster now.

The first thing here will be the obvious question of whether or not you are running an upgrade of 10 from a previous version or saw a clean install follow the initial upgrade? As seen quite often upgrade installs can be 'Buggy" and subsequently need to be replaced by a nice fresh copy of Windows. Even when the previous version sees a clean install on a brand new primary the upgrade can go crazy on you!

Out of the three 7 systems two desktops and a laptop upgraded with both desktops set up in dual boots with 7 only 1 out of 3 saw an upgrade to 10 go smoothly. That's not a good track record for upgrades! And unfortunately with the problem description you have going there it looks like it's time for you to see a nice working Clean Install take place!

You will also notice I keep several of these guides linked in my signature for just these types of occasions since I know people are going to be running into a wide variety of issues when upgrading to the latest version now seen.

 

Thanks for the suggestions Night Hawk. I had been running 8, then upgraded. I tried resetting and refreshing windows several times, but haven't had any luck.

I might be completely crazy, but I think it might have something to do with windows update. Uninstalling the latest update seems to dampen (but not remove) the problem.

One interesting thing I found is that if I open word or notepad during one of the glitch cycles, the system (or some program) rapidly prints out the date and time. Probably around 1000 times every minute. I've attached a notepad doc that I managed to open during a few of the freezes.

To clarify again, the mouse click doesn't work, but hover and two finger tap for right click work. Keyboard shortcuts work as well.

That is buggy for sure! Now that you upgraded into 10 have you tried a full wipe of the drive for a full clean install of 10 or only using the reset option? If the upgrade came out buggy the same may be and just what it seems to be doing as well coming out "Bugged Up"!

With one look at the NotePad file you have there I would say nuking the present 10 install completely off of the drive and seeing a nice fresh copy go on will likely be the working solution. That only goes to confirm what I started off by advising due to the continuous problems you will see until taking the action necessary since that copy of 10 you have on is too buggy to be fixed.

There's a number of issues involving different things and not just one area where a working fix would be available to try. You can run the System File Checker(Command prompt(admin) >"sfc /scannow") as well as the Disk Check tool(Error checking button in drive properties screen>Tools tab ir boot live to command prompt option in Advanced repair for "dskchk /f/r" command) and still not see any actual progress. In basketball terms that would be getting "Slam Dunked" by the OS there!
