BSOD/Lockups, Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap 0x7f

    Hi everyone

I built my PC in September 2015, full specs should be on my profile didn't have problems initially with it, the problem started about a year ago.

I get freezes randomly when gaming (and only when gaming it seems), initially the PC would totally lock up with the picture frozen on the screen, no mouse/kb response, and often with hideous audio where it had crashed whilst playing a sound. I had to hold the power button in for a few seconds to resolve this.I could not find anything in the event log, except a notification that the PC had shutdown unexpectedly (logged upon reboot). I reinstalled Windows 10 and it seemed to be OK for a while, but recently the problem came back and got worse. I reinstalled Windows 10 again, but this didn't help this time.

I checked all drivers were up to date (they were) and also updated the BIOS. The temperatures at the points it crashed didn't seem that high, GPU was 65-70 degrees and CPU was 35-40 degrees.I had installed a sound card (Soundblaster ZX) around the time the problems started so I figured maybe it was that. So I uninstalled it, and did a fresh Windows 10 install.I installed bare minimum (drivers for mobo, gpu and windows updates) and played one of the more demanding games that seemed particularly to cause the crashes.

It ran ok for 3 hours one night, and 2 hours the next. I thought at this point I had fixed it, but then it crashed again. This time however I did get a blue screen. The error listed was "Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap 0x7f". It said it would collate info and has a progress indicator but this never changed, so I had to hard reset.

Looking into this message some people on this website suggested RAM problems, so I ran the Windows memory diagnostic, which found nothing. I have run MemTest86 for a full 8 passes and it found zero errors (didn't think to take a photo of it unfortunately as it found nothing so didn't think it would help). I also ran the Intel Processor Diagnostic tool, everything passed OK. Crucial SSD software reports SMART test all OK.

I attach the diagnostic files from running dm_log_collector. Any advice would be appreciated

    Thanks, Matt

    :)

    Hi,

The UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP or commonly know as Bug Check 0x7F indicates that the CPU generated a trap and the kernel failed to catch this trap. To help resolve the issue, refer on this article:
Bug Check 0x7F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP. This article contains information about
the bug check's cause and its resolution.

Update us with the outcome so we can provide further assistance.

    Hi mattad0r,

It seems you have reinstalled the system?

Due to the reinstallation and the suspicioun that you did not save any dumps or other possible relevant information (understandable, it wouldn't be something one thinks about), there is not much to go on.

Please fill in your system specsPlease follow this tutorial and download the tool. The tool will give you detailed information about your system specs, please fill in your system specs more completely including PSU, cooling and other used stuff like mouse, keyboard, monitor, case, etc.
The PSU, cooling and other stuff are NOT mentioned in the tool.
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'. After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.

    Hi,

Thanks for your response. I think I might have solved the issue by editing my GPUs fan profile so the fans come on sooner and keep it overall between 45-55 degrees rather than the default (70 degrees) and I've not had a crash since doing this.

    Thanks for the help.
    Matt
