  1. BSOD "NTFS File System Error" (and others)

My PC can no longer boot, giving me the BSOD "NTFS File System Error". I've seen some talk about a new update causing this error and chkdsk is used with an SSD (which is what happened this morning) however I have been having other issues over the last few weeks, so I am not certain if the update is the cause.

What has happened so far (apologies as some bits may be a little vague as it happened a little while ago).

A few weeks ago, while playing a game the game froze, the the whole pc (couldn't get task manager up) so had to do a hard reset. On rebooting, it seemed to get stuck on the "loading screen" - just black with the "Republic of Gamers" (the mobo make/model I think) and spinning dots. I left this for like half an hour and nothing happened, so reset again and this time it said "preparing automatic repair" - IIRC I let it do it's thing and it seemed to reset and boot fine to Windows. The only lasting side effects were: I had been logged out of Chrome (and it had forgotten things like cookie settings etc), and the PC makes a veeeery loud beep when starting up (from being switched off/reset, not when waking up from sleep mode). This beep lasted for several seconds and came through the speakers and headphones (not an internal speaker/buzzer).

Over the next few weeks this happened a couple more times (when browsing the internet for example, not just gaming), and sometimes I got the BSOD with "Unmountable boot volume" error, but it would reset and boot fine.

It happened again yesterday, but on resetting brought up the Windows Advanced Recovery screen. I was able to "continue" and it would boot to windows. The "unmountable boot volume" bsod appeared somewhere in this sequence, but I can't remember where exactly. Once in windows it would crash again (initially I could use it for say 30 mins before it crashed, then 10 minutes then it would crash again almost immediately again after booting.

So this time on the Windows Recovery screen, I used the "reset this pc" option (troubleshoot - reset this pc - keep my files - local reinstall", and this seemed so work fine. I was able to use the pc uninterrupted for several hours last night, and again this morning.

This morning it crashed again - no programs responding, but also a graphical glitch on one of the monitors - purple and green horizontal lines "smeared" over whatever the monitor was supposed to be showing. So, reset, let it check the disk, reset and then I get the BSOD with the "NTFS File System Error" message. Went into the Windows Recovery screen, tried to re-install windows again the same way as before, but now whenever I click either "local reinstall" or "cloud download" it just says "getting things ready" for a few seconds then just drops me back to the Windows Recovery screen again without doing anything.

I also tried a Windows Recovery disk by using the "use a device option" it gives me the option to install windows or repair; if I select repair it just resets and goes to the BSOD again. If I try and install, I can select which partition to install on but it says 'Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.'

So, that's all that has happened. I guess my question is what is going on and where do I go from here?

Is it an SSD failure? I think I have a spare SSD.

Is it an issue that the windows recovery disk can't install to GPT partitions?

Is it related to this issue with the new windows update? I don't know whether I had the update (I did reset and install updates some time in the last week or so, but I think I would have run chkdsk several times yesterday during the resets. And wouldn't explain why it crashed again this morning causing the latest reset.

The PC: Approx 3 years old, was built + setup by PC specialist so I am not aware how Windows was installed re BIOS or UEFI - that fact it says my drives partitions are of the GTP type says to me that it was set up for UEFI (looking in the BIOS settings seems to confirm this) (note I have no knowledge of these sorts of things, just going by what I have managed to find on the internet). There are 2 hard drives - an SSD with windows installed, and a conventional drive with media/games etc.

Sorry it's so long and rambling, and I've tried to read up about the issues, so have some knowledge but may have interpreted it incorrectly! I appreciate I may need to provide more technical info about the pc, let me know and I will add it!

NTFS file system error while booting

    Hi,

I've been having issues with an NTFS file system error for the past day or so. The error has occurred continuously during the start-up.

    • Automatic repair is unable to repair the pc.
    • Resetting the PC just takes me back to the Troubleshoot menu with no apparent changes.
    • Choosing to go back to a previous version gives me the rror message that "we ran into a problem and won't be able to take you back to a previous version of windows.
    • Choosing Startup Repair gets the same issue as Automatic Repair.
    • I've gone into Command Prompt and run chkdsk, likewise sfc scannow.
    • Attempting to Boot into Safe Mode just results in another NTFS file system error.
    • And unsurprisingly, I did not make a restore point before all this happened, which I know was quite stupid.

Any suggestions on what can be done at this point? I'm running Windows 10 on a Lenovo Thinkpad.

    BSOD - Registry Error

    Your BSOD code is 0X000000051

Here's the Google search I did for it: https://www.google.com/search?q=0x0...j5.399j0j7&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=122&ie=UTF-8

There is a hotfix available that might help, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/810558

This thread makes a few good suggestions too: http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-hel...dows-7-pro-sp1-registry-error-0x00000051.html

+1 to listing your full system specs, OS version, etc. I did only look at your BSOD log file.

Run a Diskchk /R (I know you already ran one, so you can skip this)

    Run SFC /SCANNOW

    Report back.

BSOD "NTFS File System Error" (and others)

Blue screen error while turning on the computer, FAT and NTFS file system errors

    Hi Richard,

Thank you for posting your response.

    Cause

One possible cause of this bug check is disk corruption. Corruption in the NTFS file system or bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk can induce this error. Corrupted hard drive (SATA/IDE) drivers can also adversely affect the system's ability to read and
write to disk, thus causing the error.

As you are unable to log into desktop. I suggest you to create a Windows 10 installation media and perform a
Startup Repair on the device. Startup repair will not affect data saved in your computer. Once you are able to log into the computer you can back up the data to an external hard drive. This is an alternate way to boot the device
and run recovery tools when something goes wrong with the Operating system.

Please follow the steps below to do Startup repair:

    Steps:-

            • Insert the installation USB drive
and boot Windows 10 from it.

If you don't have one, you can Create an installation Media.

            • In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the ‘language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’
and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.

            • Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.

            • Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Startup Repair’
              and select the operating system.
Do let us know if you need further assistance and able to resolve Bluescreen error. Thank you.
