Windows 10: BSOD - permissions?

    Hello!


    I don't really know much about computers, so this entire process has been a little bit draining to work through as I'm trying to understand the content as I'm trying to fix the problem.


    Recently, I was playing BDL2 with a friend of mine when my PC blue screened out of nowhere. I remembered how to check the Event Viewer for the reason the system had an error that forced BS, so I went to check and saw the following:


    "The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
    {2593F8B9-4EAF-457C-B68A-50F6B8EA6B54}
    and APPID
    {15C20B67-12E7-4BB6-92BB-7AFF07997402}
    to the user DESKTOP-7H0H62T\annai SID (S-1-5-21-872993360-701220421-2617451835-1001) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool."


    Upon seeing this, I took to some lengthy internet searching to find the solution to my problem and stumbled upon a couple of threads referring to the error I was receiving. In a few of the threads, I noticed that people were told to run a scan of their computer through System File Checker and to also run DISM. Again, as someone who doesn't understand much about computers, I don't fully know what this means, but from what I gathered, it's essentially checking the integrity of all the files on the computer to look for corrupt files? Unsure, but I understand the concept. Anyways, I received a message that said all was well, so I ran back to square one.


    I found another thread that discussed the issue I was having:

    I saw the following instructions listed several times:


    1. Click Start -> Run -> Type -> dcomcnfg, expand Component Services -> Computers -> My Computer -> DCOM Config.

    2. Click View -> Detail -> Now you will get Application Name and Application ID in right side.
    3. Scroll down and find the application ID {AD65A69D-3831-40D7-9629-9B0B50A93843} -> Right Click -> Properties and select the Security tab.
    3. Click Customize under "Launch & Activation Permission" -> click Edit -> Add in the account NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM and set local launch and local activation.
    4. Restart the application Service linked to this Application ID or restart the server and monitor

    So I began to follow the instructions as the posted issue was essentially identical to mine. I haven't made any changes yet as I've run into a couple problems, 1) I don't want to ruin anything with my ignorance, and 2) I ran into another problem once I found the AppID. I found that the AppID traced to Runtimebroker - whatever that means - and when I went to the security tab under properties, things weren't available to me. For instance, after selecting edit under "Launch & Activation Permission," I couldn't add, I couldn't change permissions, and it was all essentially grayed out. It generated a textbox as I was opening the properties window that said the following:


    "One or more of the permission entries attached to Registry Value has an unrecognized type and can not be displayed."


    I have absolutely no idea what this actually means and how to remedy the problem here. I really want to understand this in the event that it happens again or if there's a way I can change it all. I'm unsure if blue screens damage your PC over time, but they don't sound good and certainly don't feel good as they're happening.


    So all in all, I'm looking to understand what's happening, why I received the blue screen, how I can prevent this from happening again, and how to actually fix the problem. I can post specs if needed and can promise that all of my drivers are up to date. I regularly check my drivers and clean my PC, so clutter and lack of updates aren't the problem here (I hope). I haven't made any massive changes to my PC or anything. I just don't know what prompted the BS and why it triggered while I was essentially doing nothing on my PC. Anything is appreciated, I would love to learn and understand this a little bit more. If you can't answer, I implore you to please ask anyone else who can, I am so very interested in fixing this issue and understanding what exactly generated the BS.

  2. No permissions

    Hi,

    I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
    folder with your username and follow these steps:

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
    This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.

    Permission issue


    Presumably because TrustedInstaller is the owner (hence you need its permission), suggesting that img3.jpg was installed by Windows at some time.

    Presumably that also means it can be uninstalled. How did you get it in the first place? Where is it located?

    If you really want to delete it yourself, then taking ownership would seem a logical first step.

    Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

    I understand that you have cancelled the security permissions while setting it to folders and you are trying to restore back. We will help you.

    • Which folder are you trying to set the permissions?
    • What are you referring to " files is affected "?
    I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

    • Open the file explorer and select the destination folder
      for which you wanted to revert back the permission changes.
    • Right click on the folder. Select the Previous versions
      tab.
    • Select the previous version in the below list and click
      apply
      .
    • Check if the issue persists.
