Please download and run Live Linux
Just don't install it. You can boot from the CD/USB you create with the ISO and use them just to try them out. They run out of ram and can be used to tell if it is a hardware problem or a Driver/Program problem. The OS installed is not loaded and not used, so it takes that out of the equation.

A friend of mine has the same memory DIMMs and CPU, another Z170 motherboard (GA-Z170M-D3H) and no discrete GPU, and is experiencing the same exact problem. His best way to reproduce the problem is to start playing HotS (he don't like DOTA...). He has the latest insider-slow build of Win10. Never tried older/other OSs. I think there are some compatibility issues due to the relatively new platform. I also have quite a doubt that Linux is able to reproduce the problem, instead could be interesting to try older windows. However he has successfully reduced BSOD frequency while in 'office', low load usage setting DIMM clock to 2133MHz. I'll post any further updates if any.

BSOD playing MGSV/DotA 2/Compiling Code, (almost) always from ntoskrnl

After messing around with BIOS, resetting it to default, setting USB 3.0 from Enabled to Auto and some other USB setting to Enabled (legacy ports?), I was able to finally use my mouse and keyboard inside the Windows 7 USB install media that I created (using Microsoft's USB media creation tool) and rebooted into.

However, after I've selected my language settings and hit next, I get a "Windows 7 Installation: A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing"

I have tried the following, to no avail:

The next step is I need to download a SATA driver for my things and try and install that, however I'm not sure which? I also don't have a setting for XHCI to disable.

Any help? I tried using the Live CD but it couldn't use my GPU (no driver support) and I couldn't test running DotA 2.

If W7 isn't an option I might try (eugh) W8.1

I have used these threads for ideas:

ASRock X99 and USB 3.0/2.0 and the EHCI/xHCI host controllers
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/952951
Where can I find Windows drivers for my SATA drive?

Can you help me install W7? What should I do next? Should I abandon and try W8.1?

I know how to install software, but I'm not an advanced user with installing software. I know just enough to keep an eye on bloatware and malware.

If you'd like to install Windows 7, I suggest to create a new thread at the Installation and setup section of the Windows 7 Help Forums sister forum.

  6. I have the exact same motherboard as you, and was having similar issues (BSOD after gaming for about 10-20 min). Have you tried upgrading to BIOS version 2.50? That did the trick for me. I've been playing SWTOR for the last couple hours with no issue.

-EDIT: I also have the same CPU and GPU as you.

I'll try that before trying W8.1.

    This looks really promising!

I have V1.10, patch notes are:

    2.0: Improve system stability
    2.2: Improve DRAM compatibility
    2.5: 1. Support DDR4 OC
    2. Improve DRAM module compatibility.

BSOD playing MGSV/DotA 2/Compiling Code, (almost) always from ntoskrnl

With the BIOS update, I am now playing with no issues.

    FML.

LESSON LEARNED, anyone with the ASROCK Z170 Pro 4 Motherboard having BSOD (with 6600K CPU and 970 GTX GPU) should update their BIOS.
