Bugs and issues of Windows 10 version 1809

Microsoft released the October 2018 Update for Windows 10, Windows 10 version 1809, on October 2, 2018 to the public.

The update is not pushed out automatically through Windows Update but requires that users and administrators install it manually for the time being.

Microsoft's official solution is to go to Settings > Update & Security and activate the "check for updates" button to install it. There are other ways to install feature updates for Windows 10.

Reports are coming in that users and admins face all kinds of issues when they run the upgrade. Not everyone runs into issues and it is likely that the update is applied without issues on most devices.

Note: it is highly recommended that you create a backup of the system partition and any important data before you install Windows Updates.

Windows 10 version 1803 was also plagued by numerous issues.

Reported Windows 10 version 1809 update issues

Upgrade issues can be experienced during download, installation or after installation. Some users get download or installation errors, and a rollback to the previous version as a consequence.

Others may get Windows 10 version 1809 to install just fine on a device but may notice afterward that something is not right.

Issue 1: missing files in User folders

Bugs and issues of Windows 10 version 1809 user-data-vanishes.png

Some users reported that files from User folders, e.g. Documents, were removed during the upgrade. One user reported on Reddit that the upgrade removed 60 Gigabytes of WAV files from the system, another that an entire user profile was deleted.

One administrator described the issue in the following way:

Just had this happen to a client of mine. Laptop with Windows 10 Home. Yesterday, it wanted to update to 1809, so he let it go. It completes and he boots and logs in -- and notices that all of his Documents and Pictures are gone. His background image is there. His desktop is there. His iTunes music is there. But all of his Documents and Pictures are gone. And not just moved somewhere else -- I scanned through with TreeSize just to make sure. They are gone.

An administrator who manages a PC affected by the issue suspects that the issue is caused by the Group Policy "Delete user profiles older than a specified number of days on system restart" in Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > User Profiles as it was set on the device and not on others where the issue was not experienced.

Whether the policy is indeed responsible has not been confirmed yet.

    Issue 2: Reset Settings

Some users reported that the upgrade reset certain Settings that they set to custom values to the defaults. One user reported on the Microsoft Answers community site the following issues:

    • System Restore was disabled and System Restore points deleted.
    • Past events of the Event Viewer were deleted.
    • Task Scheduler tasks were reset and History was wiped.
    • Some preferences in the Settings application have been reset.
    • Application associations may have been reset to the defaults.
    Other issues

Here is a short list of other issues that users may run into when trying to upgrade or install the new Windows 10 feature update:

    1. Windows 10 update freezes system after first reboot during installation.
    2. Errors starting with 0xC1900101 when trying to upgrade. These indicate driver issues.
    3. Errors starting with 0x80070070 indicate storage issues.
    4. Windows Update is stuck at a certain percentage and nothing happens.
    5. Task Manager not reporting correct CPU usage.

We will update the list when new issues emerge.

    WMP for version 1809...

My Windows 10 N, version 1803 had used Windows Media Player via installing it from the "Windows_MediaFeaturePack_x64_1803.msu" file.

Updating to 1809 removed the WMP and no longer available in the apps list:

There's an updated version listed at:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...ows-n-editions

But clicking on the link and looking for the 1809 in the drop down list of versions does not show the media feature pack available for download for 1809; instead it shows version 1709 and 1803.

Does anyone have a direct link to WMP for Windows 10 N, version 1809?

    TIA...

It's good that you're not experiencing any issues. Unfortunately many folks are, a quick Google search will show the same info im offering the OP.

    Heres a couple examples:

    Here

    Here

It's basically what I mentioned above, small issues here and there ,but nothing to end your day.. for the most part.

I know it's anecdotal, but for my experience 95% of the time it's perfectly fine. The issues I've run into wouldn't be enough for me to roll back , but they would be enough (had I not installed it yet) ,to avoid it for another couple weeks which is why I'm suggesting it to the OP

    • Microsoft Edge problems with the Fall Creators Update

    • Experience problems with the Fall Creators Update

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
