Build 10041 can't access win 8.1 shares

Since I updated to 10041 I can not get to my 8.1 notebook shares. No problem with access to the notebook from my Vista system and 10041 can access Vista and Mybooklive shares as before.

When trying to access the notebook I get a Windows Security window asking me to enter network credentials but when I do I just get the window re-appearing with the error "The user name or password is incorrect". The window also says the domain is my win 10 machine name. Is this normal?

All my shares worked fine with 9926 after I added the credentials to the Credential Manager.

I have re-added the allow insecure auth entry registry fix to no avail. Wasn't needed with 9946. Also blocked incoming on port 139 to no avail.

Can ping the IP address.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

:)

Network credentials?

I found the answer in here Build 10041 can't access win 8.1 shares Solved - Windows 10 Forums.

If you don't use passwork then don't fill it. It worked with me.

Windows 10 technical preview to full version

Hi

Me too!

I can't see why the upgrade is not automatic, particularly as there are additional features over the preview version I have (Build 10041) such as Edge.

I can't find an upgrade link and I don't want to go back to Windows 8.1 to do the upgrade.

Build 10041 can't access win 8.1 shares

In the credentials dialog, give your Windows 8.1 username as Computer_name\Username, for example if the Win 8.1 PC is MyMonsterMachine and user profile is SuperGeek give the username as MyMonsterMachine\SuperGeek. This changes the domain from the Win 10 PC to Win 8.1 PC.

Thank you so much, Kari. It was bugging me big time! These little changes with no warnings can sure trap us. The giveaway was the domain name of my win 10 machine, I guess. Strange that this machine name doesn't matter except for my 8.1 comp. I'll add it to the other credentials, anyway.

Now I can go back and remove the reg entry and firewall entry!

Wonder what will trap us next version?

Cheers and thanks, again.

I have 8 pc's on one switch + two on Wi-fi. 2 @ Win7, 3 @ Win 8.1 and the rest are win 10, build 10041. There are no share/access issues between Win 7 & 8.1. Win 10 units are -almost- blocked. In bumbling around in the various 'share' scenarios, I've been able to get at two of the Win10 from a Win 7 but none (I think) from Win10.
----------------------------
The Windows Security pop up is the show stopper. On each PC it shows
Enter your password to connect to: PC name [I want to access]
block
block [password]
Domain: (PC name of the machine I'm on???)
bold red X Logon Failure: unknown user name or bad password
------------------------------
Please provide more detail? I read your response but need help since SHARE always worked before.
I assume this is 'BUG' since Share always worked before??!

Thanks in advance

Build 10041 can't access win 8.1 shares

Sounds exactly like my problem. I thought Kari gave a complete answer, incl example, so am puzzled why you have the problem.

Perhaps you haven't used the Credential Manager in ctrl panel? In Credential Manager click "Windows Credentials" then "Add a Windows credential". This shows three entry boxes. In the first add the computer name you want to access. In the second, User name, type the machinename\username as Kari explains above. User password goes in the last.

The machinename preface for username sets the domain otherwise the domain is assumed to be the win 10 machine.

There, have another go!!

I just installed Build 10041 today and have the same problem. When I installed build 10041 I had to setup a local account as well as a Microsoft account. When I logon the Microsoft account I can't see or connect to the other network computers. When I logon with the local account everything works OK I see and can connect to the other network computers. I would really like it to work with the Microsoft account also.

I put the work for a Windows 10 Networking tutorial I had already started on ice a few weeks ago because I decided to wait this new build. At that point I had already made one video for that tutorial. I will finish the tutorial this weekend, in the meantime here's the video I already made for it:

The video is made in Build 9926 so I have to remake it. The tut with new videos will be online sometime this weekend.

Linw, Thanks for the reply, and yes, never used the credential Manager.

re: PW, is this the individual machine PW/(I hope - Pin?) that's required after re-boot? Or just create one?
I'll try both.

Anyway, thanks to you and the Community.

Searched for 'How to Windows 8.1 Credential Manager' and got another group's explanation.
I now know how to do it and it's a real PAIN IN THE REAR for the average user. The Share function
was doable, involved, but doable. For a single machine, annoying, with 10 PC's it's a HUGE step back
in user friendliness. Hopefully The Win10 Team will re-install the easier share function soon.

Again, y'all spoke truth, -THANKS-, I just didn't want the answer.

Build 10041 can't access win 8.1 shares

Found out by accident if I logon on using a pin number I can't see or connect to my network computers. If I logon on using my password everything works as it should.

I'd never used the Credential Manager before, either, but I can sort of appreciate a one stop place for providing access permissions. Maybe MS has a grand plan for security that we can't quite see yet! I'm happy to go along with this but I only have 4 comps to deal with.

Good to hear you have cracked it!
