  1. Building a server or get a NAS

I'd like to build a server or NAS. I think I need a server. I am VERY much a newb when it comes to Linux. I'd like to stick with Windows unless someone can point me to some real clear YT links or something. It is for a home business with 3 PCs accessing it. I will need to access it remotely at times. I have good internet. Thoughts?

    :)

  2. Building NAS Server

I've been thinking of building an Atom based NAS Server for a while now. I have a 1tb Spinpoint that I can use for the HDD and I think that it would be perfect. Here is a quick parts list. Any comments or sugestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks. I've never built or even used one of these but it would be cool.

    Atom 330 board
    Ram
    Case

The option to add a second drive in a Mini-itx case would be nice but no deal breaker. I'm thinking about using FreeNAS for an OS or a bare bones Gentoo install, not sure yet. Like I said I've never even used an NAS before so suggestions would be cool.

    NAS server not visible

We have a NAS server on the network. One of our laptops recently got destroyed by water damage and had to be replaced. The new laptop is Win 10, and the NAS server is not visible on the network. On the old, now water-damaged laptop (Win 7), the NAS server had a desktop shortcut, so even if it wasn't visible on the network, the files could still be accessed.

How can I either force the computer to recognize the NAS server, or create a desktop icon that is linked to it without it being visible in the network listing?

    Thanks.

Building a server or get a NAS

    Buy/Build a NAS

I am looking to build or a buy nas.
I am looking at the Synology DS413/DS1513+.

Things I absolutely want out of my nas:
    • Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR) equivalent functionality.
IE, mixing of drive sizes, and ability to expand SHR array after it is built.
    • Device works as a drive via USB 3.0.
    • Read speeds at or over 200 mb/s over usb 3.0
Is there an Linux distro, or other OS I can use to whitebox a nas with the above features?
I have enough parts sitting around to build a nas, but I want the advantages of SHR.

Thanks for any NAS software knowledge in advance.

When is a dedicated computer server better than a NAS?: My understanding is that a NAS is sort of the middle between an external hard drive and a computer server.
