    Built a New Computer and Want to Retire the Old One. How Do I Proceed Regarding Licenses?


    Just built a new computer and plan on wiping my old one to gift to a friend. Said friend will be acquiring his own license of Windows 10, so I want to get the license off of said computer. I believe I bought the physical disc with the key for that computer, but I honestly don't remember. It's been several years.I did find it odd that I wasn't required to enter a key to install windows on my new PC. Both computers are registered under my Microsoft account right now, and I'm not really sure how that works from a licensing perspective. It seems very confusing, and I can't find any straight answer

    Windows 10 License question - New PC and old computer still exists.

    Hi Microsoft Community!

    I'm in the process of assembling a new PC and am going to give the old PC to my younger brother. I want to transfer my existing license to the new computer and if possible "de-license" the old one. These are the particulars:

    • My Windows 10 license was purchased on the Microsoft website and originally activated with a product key.
    • I still have this product key.
    • I have since formatted the PC and after re-installing Windows 10 the activation is now with a digital license.
    • I prefer using local accounts on my PC and thus haven't created a Microsoft account enabled user.

    My question is how to best go about transferring the license? Can I just format the old PC and activate my license on the new PC with the product key? If I do that will I get a problem when my brother installs Windows on the old computer again, since it
    now has a digital license?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Wifi and Modem Advice Regarding New and Old Computers

    You need the Modem/Router to connect to your ISP service.
    The white jack connects to the the ISP and the 4 yellow jacks connect to your PC's with an Ethernet cable.
    The Modem also has WiFi built in.
