  1. Call from Windows Security Headquarters

I just received a phone call from 803-302-8669 which was indicated as coming from Washington DC. I do not know the name of the individual I talked to first, but I insisted on speaking to a supervisor who told me his name was Officer John Williams.

The main topic of the conversation was that someone was using my IP address to gamble illegally and that they need access to my computer to be sure the problem was taken care of.

Both men told me my computer would be confiscated and I would be arrested by the FBI if I did not follow their instructions.

I told them I would not give them access to my computer and politely hung up on them.

I checked on my computer for Windows Security Headquarters and found several sites that indicated this was a scam.

I would like to know if I did the right thing. The information above is the most I can give you, except that the first man had a thick foreign accent. I don't know accents well, so I can't tell you what type of accent it was.

I hope you can give me some insight to this call.

    Thank you - Patti Temple

    :)

That made me so facepalm. Some people have absolutely no clue. I hope they don't take you for granted with all this you're doing for them.

SonicWall is a good security product, so Mindweaver's suggestion sounds like a good one and should make for a rather bigger baby step. Let's hope they take it.

Windows 8 Secure Boot Feature: Not So Secure?

Here is a statement from a Kernal Developer at Red Hat:

I'm not sure this exploits the legacy BIOS but rather it exploits the legacy boot method on MBR drives, injecting a signed key before the OS boots, which you are correct in that it has nothing to do with Windows 8. And the simplest fix would just be to require boot drives use GPT when Secure Boot is enabled in UEFI.
