Can a network profile be renamed in Windows 10 Home (official release)

Hi. I'm new to TenForums, so I hope I'm posting appropriately, and, apologies in advance for a longish post!

Someone posted a nice tutorial on how to rename a network profile in Win10. It provided two approaches: using administrative tools (secpol.msc) and editing the registry. Apparently, the use of secpol.msc is disabled in Win10 Home. (Per encountering an error message even once =locating= secpol.msc and then seeing a few items on the 'net to that effect.) If anyone knows differently, I'd love to know the fact of the matter.

The seeming inability to use an appropriate tool leads me to a question about the registry editing approach. I have wireless connections "Curtis-2g" and "Curtis-5g" (with those SSIDs), and my wired connection was given an inappropriate name of "Curtis-2g" that I'd like to change. However, looking through the profile list, I see only one "Curtis-2g" (as well as a "Curtis-5g") and I'm afraid to touch that one in case it is the one attached (correctly) to the wireless connection. Can anyone tell me how I can find the profile for my wired connection per se? I wouldn't have thought that there would be only one profile name given the situation of inappropriately assigning an SSID to the wired connection?

    Thanks in advance.

    :)

    Hi KemoX11,

Welcome to the Nokia Support Discussions!

I noticed that your phone runs with Windows Phone 8.1, you may want to share it here: Msdn forums - Windows Phone Preview for Developers
. Due to the reason that Nokia Care network can only deal with official consumer software releases.

The WIFI and ethernet come from the Router for how they are named.

You can change the adapter name, but the connection name is only going to change if you go into the router and do it.

Attempted to rename a wireless profile using regedit (Windows 10 Home Edition):

    • Renamed “old” to “new” in hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\networklist\profiles\{hex} and hkey…\networklist\signatures\unmanaged\hex, rebooted and verified above changes successful BUT still have “old” in settings\network & internet\wi-fi\manage known networks?

    • Tried renaming “old” to “new” in hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\wcmsvc\cmpol\{hex} text BUT text reverted to “old” after reboot and still have “old” in settings\...\manage known networks?

    Please help! Thank you.

  6. If you are in Network and Internet and have clicked on Wi-FI is this where you see this name?

If you click on manage known networks and then click on the one you don't want, don't you get the option to "Forget this Network"?

  9. I am trying to rename a network connection from "local area connection 2" to "local area connection" but get an error msg "local area connection exist". I don't see that "local area connection" when I use "netsh" command or under network and sharing center.

  10. I'm going to bet that if you do a total Network reset you will be able to start over. This will cause all wireless passwords to be forgotten. Myself, I would ignore name. You are only plugged into one network at a time, generally your own.

  11. Every time I start the PC in the morning it could not find the network connection. I had to re-scan the network hardware using device manager or restart the PC. It was looking for a "network connection 2" and always ran into conflict. I went ahead and did the network reset and it did solve my problem. Thank you.
