Windows 10: Can I Install Windows Server 2012 R2 on personal laptop that has Windows 10 OS

I'm planning to learn CA IDM solution. The prerequisites for accessing training material is "Windows Server 2012 R2" has to be installed on my laptop.


Can I obtain license for Windows Server 2012 R2 for students?

I have purchased the product key of Windows Server 2012 R2. Now the server is on Windows Server 2012 R2 Evaluation. I found a few links there they explained on how to convert from Windows Server 2012 R2 Evaluation to Windows Server 2012 R2 with valid product

Is this a correct way to do? If I follow this step, will my data be erased?

I want to avoid formatting/fresh Windows install because there are some software in the server that we do not know how to backup. We just want to get it activated now, backup will be sorted out later.

 

Is it possible to upgrade Windows 10 to Server 2012 R2?

I thought so... OK I guess if I ever have the opportunity to create a small server, I'll have to do a clean installation. I thought Windows Server 2012 was the equivalent of Windows 8 and 2012 R2 that of 10. At least I learned something new

What about add-ons or third party utilities to create a file server or mail server or whatever in Windows 10? Are there any official Microsoft tools? Are there some Windows 10 features I could enable and adjust? Thank you.

No. Windows Server 2012 R2 is the server version of Windows 8.1

The server version of Windows 10 has not yet been released, but it will be called Windows Server 2016.

And no, you cannot upgrade a desktop OS to a Server OS.
