Windows 10: Can I run the Windows 10 tech preview after the end date?

All the stuff I posted, I was referring to getting the win 10 upgrade through WU while still running 7 or 8.1. Clean install through ISO from win 7 would require entering the key, through win 8.1 it would find it in the BIOS (EUFI) like Winuser said. Didn't mean to cause a bunch of confusion. Sorry......

Back to talking about drive size for your Windows 10 installation.
After a lot of digging I've found the main reason that I need so much space for my install.

It has to do with how much ram you have and the size of the hiberfil.sys file.
This file is created by Windows based on what it would take to store everything you can have in ram.

My computer has 32 Gigabytes of ram and my hiberfil.sys is almost 26 Gigabytes all by itself, as opposed to the one shown above which is 1.6 Gb.

So it appears that, that's something to consider when deciding how big to make your partition.
If you have a lot of ram, you will need more space.

I disabled hibernation on my computer and it reduced the amount of space used by 26 Gb.
I'm going to leave it that way for a while and see if it causes any problems.

Someone posted a caveat about removing Hiberfil awhile back....... How-to-Geek maybe *Huh
Nothing terribly important as I recall but it gave me second thoughts about removing it!
One of those "if'n" things, I think *chuckle

Mike, I see that you are from Michigan and I'm not sure "if'n" is part of the vocabulary there?
To explain:
When I was a child my grandfather caught me crying..........

Fast startup option also affects the hiberfil.sys. Based on your system specs, you probably wouldn't notice a thing. Mine is turned off and the difference is about 10 seconds.... whoopeee!

This is from eightforums, but pertains to 10 also. Good explanation. Personally, I would rather start fresh in the morning without possibility of dragging any trash with me from the day before!

I did turn it off hibernation, when I did that the option for fast start up also disappeared, and I've rebooted and put the computer to sleep.

Have't noticed any change but saved a lot of space on my C:\ drive.

I believe that one of the reasons for my large Windows folder is that I got the bug on the last update that downloaded all the language packs (the update took 4 hours).

My DriverStore folder is 8.4 Gigabytes, I'm pretty sure it doesn't need to be that big, but I think it has drivers for every possible language in it.

Ran across this. See what it shows on your box.....

• Open a Command Prompt as an Administrator.
• Bring up the user interface for uninstalling language packs by typing the following command and press Enter:lpksetup /u
• Select the language packs you want to uninstall, and follow the instruction of the wizard.

While I don't notice a difference in boot times, (it actually seems faster by a little bit) what I do see it how much quicker it shuts down.

Without having to store all that information it shuts off right away.
I was taking forever to shut down before.

I made a system image a little while ago, so I'll have a go at getting rid of the language packs as well.
