Can not Backup or system image, Win 10

I can write to and from the J: drive so I think the disk 2 will not be an issue whether I have two drives on it or not. The problem might lie with a partition on another disk by the indications of the error code it reported. All is working well other than windows not allowing a backup to be made. I did do a back up using Marcrium but I do want to get this issue corrected. Thanks so much for you help and interest. I'll keep muddling along looking for an answer.

I have just discovered I have two different disk formats on my system. MBR disk 1 is my G: drive, all my other disks are formatted as GPT Disks. Not sure what this is going to mean for me but I am going to bed!

    Hi TerryGer *Smile

Our time zones do not overlap well!

I've looked through the thread and see that you did have multiple EFI partitions, however it now seems you have a mixture of GPT and MBR formats and quite a history of upgrades and disk changes which have created various partitions some of which are unnecessary.

This needs to be cleaned up but I can see that for now you just want to get a system image of your OS. When you start the system backup just specify the partitions you want to back up rather than trying to do them all. See if that helps.

I attempted to create a system image with just the C: drive and am getting the same failure

After I changed my backup location to my G: drive I was able to make a successful system image backup. It was the same setup as the backup that just failed when backed up to my H: drive. My G: drive is a ssd 1 tb onboard my computer which I do not want to use as a backup location. My H: external eSATA hard drive has many files on it and is used every time the computer is used with no problems.

Which drives are GPT and which drivers are MBR? I would install MiniTool Partition Wizard Free. Use that program to delete the first small partition on Disk 2. Expand H: drive to fill the disk. Convert Disk 2 to GPT if needed to match Disk 0.

Best Free Partition Manager for Windows | MiniTool Partition Free

Also, when you can, from an elevated ("run as administrator") command prompt, type:

    diskpart
    Select disk 2
    detail disk

Post the results here, please, and we can figure out what is going on with the disk that has H: drive on it.

Since you are able to save the backup on G: drive - the problem has to be with the disk containing H: drive.

On this shot the H: drive is disk 3 and it shows three segments before the H partition, of the three ahead of h are the J: and an unallocated before and after it.

I would use that EaseUS partition program to delete all other partitions on the H: drive disk and then expand H: drive to fill it. Then, and I don't know how to do it in EaseUS, you probably need to set the H: drive partition to a data type partition for a GPT disk which is ID=ebd0a0a2-b9e5-4433-87c0-68b6b72699c7. That should fix it.

I have tried both EaseUS partition magic and MiniTool to remove the unallocated segments from the H: drive disk. They seem to be inbedded and not removable. On my last screen shot you can see these as an asterisk above and below each drive letter and they are on each drive. It must be some win 10 thing? I have another computer here with the same G raid set up and it is showing the same asterisk by the drive letters. I was able to empty this drive and I went to the cmd prompt and did a disk clean, reinitialized it and have the same thing when it was completed. So I think I want to try to find out something about these unallocated segments and why they are there.

The unallocated spaces are not the problem because they are not partitions. They are just empty spots on the disk. Having actual partitions on the disk of the wrong type is the problem.

You can never delete an unallocated space because there is nothing there to delete. You can use the unallocated space by adding it to an existing partition or creating a new partition in it.

    Hi, TerryGer.

Just for completeness sake, despite all that's been posted up to this point. Can you execute "bcdedit" from an elevated (admin) command prompt and post a screenshot of the result - at least the output paragraph that is titled "WIndows Boot Manager" ?

Here is the shot requested. I did try to extend the h: partition into the unallocated space which did not work out so well. I ended up getting the disk changed from a basic to a dynamic disk. Right now I am working on getting space on my NAS to move everything off of disk H: so I can do, what?

Thanks. My request was more a "belt and suspenders" kind of thing. I wanted to make sure Windows Boot Manager was actually pointed at a second partition (as it is) rather than a first partition (like H*Smile and, even though you don't have boot problems, there wasn't an indication that imaging may be confused if it were otherwise.

Anyways, I would look to getting the data on drive H: moved off to NAS, if anything, so then you can totally wipe the disk containing H: and J: clean, format it appropriately (MBR may be better choice), and then restore the data you moved off when backing up H:.

You could try command prompt to image the C partition and all partitions related to it. This is the command where "S" is the disk to which the image will be written. You may have to change the letter to reflect your setup
wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:S: -include:C: -AllCritical -quiet
