    That is, I have an external drive with considerably more than 16 gigs of capacity, but I do not have another one of 16 gigs. I would like to have the large drive CONTAIN my backup media, without relegating it ONLY to that purpose. Would the storage of extraneous files on the drive containing my backup media in any way interfere with its function, should the necessity ever arise to restore my laptop's hard drive from it?

    It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

    Download Back Up Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

    and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

    You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

    I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.

    External media drive not offered for backup

    We understand that you want to back up your files on your DVD. At this point, we suggest that you try these steps so you can create a backup of it:

    • Open the folder that contains the files that you want to back up.
    • Select the files to be moved on the DVD disc inserted.
    • Click Share on the tab section of the window.
    • Click Burn to disc to transfer it to the DVD disc.

    In case these steps didn't work, kindly consult your manufacturer so they could recommend a software compatible for your computer to burn your files on your DVD.

    Connect the USB Thumb drive

    Right click the file you want to transfer and click 'Send to' - flash drive (that drive should be bottom of he 'Send to' list . . .
