  2. How do I copy the value of a Registry Key, or part of the value, using a .reg file?

    Hello! My name is Cristiano. I'm an Independent Advisor. I'm glad to help you.

    To do that, you can use the Registry Editor's export feature to create a .reg file that contains the registry key or value you want to copy. Then you can modify the .reg file to change the registry key or value as needed.

    To copy the value of a registry key, you can export the key and modify the exported .reg file to change the key name and value. For example, to change the "FeatureDisableKey" value to "FeatureEnableKey", you can export the following key:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Some\Key\Location]

    "FeatureDisableKey"="some_unknown_value"

    Then, open the exported .reg file in a text editor and change the key name and value to:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Some\Key\Location]

    "FeatureEnableKey"="some_unknown_value"

    To copy a part of the value of a registry key, you can use the REG_EXPAND_SZ value type, which allows you to include environment variables in the value. For example, to change the path to the application in the following key:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Application\shell\open\command]

    @=""Root_Directory\Some_Application.exe""

    You can use the %ProgramFiles% environment variable to reference the Program Files directory on any computer. To do this, export the key and modify the exported .reg file to use the REG_EXPAND_SZ value type and include the %ProgramFiles% environment variable in the value. For example:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Application\shell\open\command]

    @=hex(2):22,00,25,00,50,00,72,00,6f,00,67,00,72,00,61,00,6d,00,46,00,69,

    00,6c,00,65,00,73,00,25,00,5c,00,44,00,69,00,66,00,66,00,65,00,72,00,65,

    00,6e,00,74,00,5f,00,41,00,70,00,70,00,6c,00,69,00,63,00,61,00,74,00,69,

    00,6f,00,6e,00,73,00,5c,00,44,00,69,00,66,00,66,00,65,00,72,00,65,00,6e,

    00,74,00,5f,00,41,00,70,00,70,00,6c,00,69,00,63,00,61,00,74,00,69,00,6f,

    00,6e,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,22,00,00,00

    In the above example, the value of the "(Default)" registry value is set to "Root_Directory\Different_Application.exe". When the .reg file is merged into the registry, the "%ProgramFiles%" environment variable is expanded to the Program Files directory on the computer where the file is being merged. Note that the value is in hex format, which is required for REG_EXPAND_SZ values.

    Once you have modified the .reg file to your satisfaction, you can distribute it to users for them to import into their registry by double-clicking on the file.

    Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild

    Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

    I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

    Might be helpful to list what i've done can someone help me. I need the default for every value in this reg. :) I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

    I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.
