Cannot access Bios or Boot Menu during startup

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-H97M-D3H motherboard and installed some DVD drives to rip music off of CDs. Doing so, the boot order got messed up and I was unable to get to the Boot Menu (F12 key) or the Bios (using the delete key). I tried a wired USB keyboard and tried using the old-fashioned PS/2 socket, but none of these worked. If I enter the bios using the USB keyboard through the booted Windows 10 menus, the keyboard works fine to navigate. I finally had to manually switch SATA ports (trial and error because I did not know which SATA socket I needed to boot off of) for my SSD boot drive to get my computer working, but I would like to find a fix for not getting being able to access the Bios or Boot Menu from a cold startup in case I ever have to do this again.

I also tried using a CD Boot Rescue disk, but it would not boot using a flash drive or any of my DVD drives.

    :)

Windows 10 update bricked my PC

Its not the monitor. Im able to access the monitor’s setup menu and view it. Changing out the HDMI cable does nothing.

I was able to stop the beeping cycle by pressing the bios key during startup. But if I startup without pressing the bios key, the beeping cycle resumes.

this really seems to be the computer stuck in a loop in boot mode.

  3. Windows 10 - live login does not work - no option to switch user, no other options

If she can't boot the DVD, she has to change the Boot sequence in the Bios. She can enter the Bios on a Asus laptop by pressing Esc during startup. I used F2 to access the Bios which does not work on a Asus laptop i learned.

    Just some thoughts.

Do you have a bios reset button on your motherboard?

You could try unhooking all drives except your ssd with Windows 10 installed and see if that will get into your bios using the Delete key.
Make sure your ssd is connected to your "0" sata port. Your motherboard manual should show you your sata port setup.

Cannot access Bios or Boot Menu during startup

Yes I do, and it makes the boot up super fast using an SSD, but I used to always be able to enter the Bios whenever I had to at startup whenever I had boot problems. It's as if some sort of malware is now preventing it. The Gigabyte motherboad is smart enough to provide the Bios and Boot Menu after a boot failure. Again, it used to work fine even when I had the ultra-fast mode enabled, and it still provides that same option now, except that I can no longer access it.

  9. The manual states that USB and PS2 devices are disabled when ultra-fast boot is enabled so this would be expected behavior. Did you change this option or update your BIOS recently?

Kari's suggestion always works, or you can just disconnect all SATA devices except the one you need to boot from when you find yourself in this situation, and then keep trying your luck with the boot key. Tom's Hardware also observes that resetting CMOS returns things to default settings with neither Fast Boot nor UltraFast Boot enabled. Interestingly , while most motherboard vendors offer their own "boot to UEFI" utilities that you can run from Windows, I can't find one from Gigabyte... Maybe somebody else knows about such a utility? @essenbe @f14tomcat @Dude @Cliff S @Caledon Ken @fdegrove

PS: Now that I stop to think about it, it's been 5 years or so since I owned a Gigabyte board. I used to buy them all the time, but am now fixated on Asrock. Used to be I knew where everything Gigabyte was tucked away, but not any more. So sorry! I'm going to email my friend Tom Soderstrom, who still reviews mobos for Tom's Hardware. He definitely knows a lot that I don't, and might know something helpful in this case...

Kari's suggestion always works to get into bios, or you could start tapping the one time boot menu key as soon as you hear the post beep. I don't know of a utility to access the one time boot menu.

I like that it does that, but again, the motherboard used to be smart enough to revert back to a mode where I was able to enter the Bios whenever there was a boot failure, like a power outage (and I have that option ENABLED within the Bios). It still does revert back to that state where I should still be able to enter the Bios after a boot failure, but for some odd reason, it no longer works.

Cannot access Bios or Boot Menu during startup

I believe there is an option to boot to USB in advanced startup. Just hold the shift key down and press restart. I believe one of the options is boot from a device.

That's also one of the options from Kari's command prompt suggestion.

It sounds like many of these posts assume that I'm able to boot into Windows, which I'm very aware of. Please correct me if this assumption is incorrect. Again, I need to be able to get into the Bios from a cold restart. Or, when you say "restart" are you talking about the restart button on my computer case?

Not the case. Can you get to the login screen?
