    Cannot access shared network drive

On my desktop (AKA S4, currently running Win8.1 x64 pro) I have shared out four of the hard drives with full permissions. I have 5 PCs in my network and all can access the four drives. My sister is visiting and currently accessing my network via cat5 wire. On her PC (running Win 10 x64 pro) if I view the network in Windows Explorer I can see my desktop (S4). When I double-click on S4 I'm prompted to enter network credentials. "Enter your credentials to connect to: S4" I entered my logon S4 ID and password but it tells me that the user name or password is incorrect. What the heck should I be entering? All computers are part of the same work group (WORKGROUP) and all computers are wired connected. All computers can access the internet.

    :)

Cannot access the network drive shared from windows 10

Hi, i have shared one of my internal hard drive to access from my mobile phone over wifi network. When i scan the network using any file manager from phone i can see my computer's name showing under SMB, but when i tried to login using the credentials its
not letting me in, gives me an error saying authorization failed. It was working fine on Windows 8.1 but after upgrading to windows 10 its not working.

*File sharing and network discovery is turned on.

*Hope i am entering the right username name and password.

But still not sure why its not working.

    Cannot access shared network drive

    Hi

Have you compared the settings in: Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings and made sure they are the same?

You need to turn off Password Protected Sharing.

    Regards

Both my desktop and her laptop have "Turn off password protected sharing" selected.

Is that in the 'All Networks' section?

I have a Windows 10 desktop (10) and a Windows 7 desktop (7), all connected via a Work WORKGROUP and have Public sharing turned off, 128 bit encryption, and Password protected sharing turned off.

Then on 7, I tried to access 10 via Windows Explorer and it requested the log in details - I entered the details of the account I was currently logged in to on 10. This all worked but it had to be the same as the account you are currently logged in on 10 (I was switching from a local account and a MS account for a while and it stopped working if I logged into a different account on 10.

Can you access the Wind 10 PC from any of the Win 8?

    Regards

    Yes it is.

On both systems I have Public sharing turned off, 128 bit encryption, and Password protected sharing turned off.

    Cannot access shared network drive

Have you tried turning off Anti Virus Runtime protection and the Firewall on the Win 10 laptop and Win 8 desktop to remove that from the investigation?

Also can the the Win 8 access any Win 10 shared folders?

I turned off AV (Kaspersky Total) on both systems still could not access.
I cannot access anything on S4 (win8.1) from the laptop (Win 10)

Cannot access shared network drive [IMG]

In windows explorer as soon as I double click on the system in the network display I get the prompt (above image)

BTW I don't think this is a windows issue, I've never been able to get access for my guest. Just my systems have access (I don't know why). I think all of my personal systems have the same user id. The permissions are that Everyone has full access. However normally when I open the network view in windows explorer I can expand S4 and see the drives.

  10. welcome to windows 10 where this is the new way Microsoft makes us deal with networking.... seriously, its horse crap.

THE easiest method to fix this is to create an account for your sister on that PC.
it can just be called sister, what ever you want. make a simple password for her to use.
    then have her log in like this;
for the username - yourcomputername/yoursistersnewaccount (I always forget if its a / or a \ so try both. but you can try without the 'yourcomputername' part of it, it may work that way too.)
password - whatever you made it.

YES it should just work, but thank microsoft for breaking windows shares.

when sister leaves delete her account.

I just set up sharing for my devices, I use User Accounts for them. Ran into a little problem sharing folders with the devices setup as user accounts. I set up Sharing to be identical for all shared folders, then, I found some folders could share and others would show but you couldnt explore them (no permissions message popup). After some head bashing, I compared permissions on the Security tab, and figured out that windows 10 required me to have "Authenticated Users" on Security tab/settings to share thru user accounts. Hope this helps.

OK this sorta worked. I created an account on my desktop (Lisa) and from her laptop when prompted for credentials I selected other user (or whatever it really was), for the user name I entered S4\Lisa and for the PW I entered the PW I assigned to her account.

Now I can see all of the six drives I've shared out on S4 (my desktop). Now comes the strange part. From her laptop I can create a file (such as a word document) on one of the shared drives but I cannot create a folder on any of the shared drives. On the desktop all drives were shared with full permissions.

I can well imagine that sometimes a guest will need to create a folder on my desktop. I now have a workaround but I'd still like to get the full solution, assuming this is possible.

When I created the account Lisa I defaulted to a standard account. After encountering the above I changed it to Admin level but this did not resolve the issue of creating a folder on one of the drives.

OK possible workaround - On my sister's laptop I map one of the drives on my deskpop (S4) and now I can create a folder on that drive.

Thus we seem to have a workaround if
    • The system that owns the drive also has an account for the user that desires access .
    • The user that wants the access must map the drive to their system (this assumes that the permissions have been correctly set on the drive) and now the user can create folders on the shared drive.

    Cannot access shared network drive

I did not see this as an issue, I think this was because the network drive is on a Win8.1 system and my sister's laptop is running Win 10.
How/where did you establish the "Authenticated Users" (pictures would be appreciated for us dummies *Smile)

AH!!!! SUCCESS!!!!! Much thanks for your feedback, this has been a problem for me for years.
With this there is no need to create a user account on the pc that owns the drive.
YEA, you got my vote for best solution.

I went down the path just to set Sharing. IMHO if you have Everyone on the Sharing tab they should be automatically on the Security tab with the same rights.

I now have Security settings (Full) being applied on all of my shared drives. Because of the size of these drives (1TB to 14TB) it will take a bit of time even with a six core processor.
