    Cannot access shared network drive

Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean by WORKGROUP type is Work and not Home. I just ensure that all of the computers are in the same WORKGROUP and I always just use WORKGROUP as the name. Possible the following image will answer your question.

I just realized that the post topgundcpmade is no longer in the forum or at least I don't see it. Following is an image similar to what was included in the post

Cannot access shared network drive [IMG]

When I viewed the properties on my drives and selected the Security tab the user Everyone was not in the list. After adding Everyone to the list the access worked as expected. Previously I had just clicked on the Sharing tab and ensured that Everyone had full permissions.

BTW the setting for my 14TB drive (hardware RAID 5 array) is still running and it has been for over five hours. It is taking a LOT longer to apply the setting than I expected, the other seven drives applied the settings a long time ago but they are much smaller. The array is almost full thus windows has a LOT of work to do when applying this setting.

Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

    If this helps.
step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.

    Cannot access shared network drive

Thanks a lot. I spent hours to understand why my W10 PC had access to my W7 PC, but W7 PC had no access to W10 PC in the workgroup environment. All sharing options were set to "everyone".
I did not realize that also in de Security tab the user "everyone" had to be defined. Thanks!

Thanks a lot with this Thread I finally figured out how networking work with Win10. *Party

Even if it's on my personal network I've created a simple new user with the same name password on each computers of my network just for sharing files.

The network is just for me it make thing harder in case someone try to hack my network and delete "just for the fun" it add a security layer. I feel more secure this way than having it shared to "EVERYONE" with full permission. I removed also the "public share" since I don't use them .*Nerd

    Thanks again to all contributors.

  6. I could scream! so much time wasted on this stupid error, as if time is not precious enough!
It probably would work fine if I could see the other computer! But I cannot see the other computer!

I was just going through this too. The name of the PC I'm trying to connect to is "TV", and say that the TV main user account is ''. When connecting to the PC, connect as a different user, and instead of the usual '' and 'password', put 'TV\' then the password. The account then connects and the shared drives show up.

  8. Cannot access shared network drive

After re-sharing everything and creating 100% matching user accounts, trying both the host and guest PC names as the Domain for the login username, and still not being able to access the shares, I finally tried the IP address of the host rather than the computer name to access the share, e.g. \\192.168.1.1\sharename

    Worked fine!

Oddly if I Remote Desktop to the host I can connect using the computer name.

Not sure why the computer name isn't resolving on my network shares, but I can live with this. My host is a 'server' upstairs with a fixed IP. I can imagine for others it's a massive problem though, if they prefer to use DHCP to assign flexible IPs and it's not an always-on machine. It'll be problematic for me if I ever switch to a different subnet with a different IP, as I'll need to re-point all my share links, but I can deal with that when it happens.

Perhaps by then I'll have figured out how to access my Homegroup.... that hasn't worked since Windows 7. They might be able to make their OS nice and neat but Microsoft's approach to networking seems a little unreliable and complicated when it breaks....

  12. I'm unable to connect to a shared folder on a computer running Windows10 from another computer running Windows10, and this shared folder has permissions open for everyone. All I get it the network password prompt as posted in post #7 of this thread, I've tried all my network passwords including the user; administrator, nothing works ?

    Cannot access shared network drive

It's easy to fix, just make a new user account with a password on the computer you have a shared folder and give this user the permission you want on the folders you want to share. When windows will ask you for credential/password just enter the user name and password you have done.

I've created a user for sharing my network folders on all my computer, it's the same user name and password on all my computer for the shared drive so it's easy to remember and also very secure. *Nerd

    Regards !

  14. The dilemma is, it was working, when it stopped whereas I couldn't access the shared folder from another PC, I couldn't tell you, what I can tell you is, once again is, it was working with both PC running Windows10.

Since it was working on the computer sharing the folder as a local account (Administrator) what has caused it to break, if the shared folder has everyone specified for the people to share; I prefer not to create another account, but debug what has caused this to break ?

I've had similar problems accessing shared drives/folders between my desktop (current Fast Ring W10 Insider) and my Surface Pro 4 (W10 10586.318.) Sometimes I could access from one device, and not the other, sometimes the reverse way, sometimes neither. *Rolleyes
I found that going to System/Advanced system settings/System Properties/Computer Name, click the Network ID... tab and select "This is a home computer; it's not part of a business network" radio button, restart as advised, allows me to access both ways.
But that only works until the devices are shutdown again. I normally shutdown overnight.
On restarting the "This computer is part of a business network etc" button is selected again, and access isn't available. I haven't yet found how to make the "This is a home computer etc" selection stick. Even after a restart, selecting the "Network ID..." tab shows it has auto reverted to "This computer is part of a business network etc."
Other family members are also connected to the network, we have assigned a unique name to the network, rather than using the default "Workgroup" name. But the Workgroup name also auto reverts to "Workgroup"
While I have found that this works, having to go through the setup process with its reboot requirement at each start up is a pain. I hope someone can advise how to get those settings to stick, or has a better solution.
    Thanks
