Windows 10: Cannot add Microsoft account because "(email address) is already here."

Hello all,

Somehow my computer login got associated with a different Microsoft account than the one I want to use (and that I think I was using originally.) So I switched to a local account then went back to sign in with Microsoft account and get the error "(email address) is here already. Another user on this device uses this Microsoft account, so you can't add it here."

The steps I've tried so far with the Microsoft account's email address:

Deleted saved login registry (HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/software/Microsoft/IdentityCRL/StoredIdentities)

Removed or renamed all other registry mentions of email address. (That didn't help so I restored one registry entry related to unread Thunderbird email.)

Changed security policy re Block Microsoft Accounts to disabled

Removed account from Microsoft Family group (didn't help so I added back.)

Removed all other users from computer user settings. There are no user folders other than Default, Public, and the current user.

Deleted profile entry in registry for prior account that had the account display name which was the same as the email address (an account I created while trying to solve the problem.) Deleted Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-3363597088-1281597286-3602940714-1008

Removed account from Outlook

Removed account from Microsoft Store

In settings/email & accounts there are no accounts listed

I've been working on this for many hours with no success...any help much appreciated!

Unauthorized Emails from my account?

Embarrassingly, everyone on my email list received spam originating from my account, which is Yahoo based. A scan with MSE found two trojans, a Java/Rowindal.A and a Downloader:Java/OpenStream.W.

Are these the source of my unwanted email traffic? Would someone opening this email be infected with the same problems? Could there be more dangerous underlying threats.

Hell, I have quite a few high dollar clients in my list. I always treat people's addresses like they were unlisted numbers, and don't send frivolous "Hey how are ya" junk. This is mortifying.*Eek!

It is more than likely that your email account was hacked, either by a virus sniffing your password, or just simply hacked.

Either way, change your password on your email account. Unfortunately the damage by already be done. They already have your contact list and your email address associated with that contact list. There is nothing stopping them from sending out emails using their own SMTP servers to everyone on your contact list and claiming the emails are from your email address. They don't actually have to have access to your yahoo account or even any yahoo server to send emails to people that come from your address.

On which Microsoft platform are you trying to change your email address (Xbox account, Outlook account, Community Forum)?

How can I un-link my current Microsoft account that is tagged to my Windows activation license and link it to a new Microsoft account?

You don't make a new account & try to move your entitlements to it, you change the email address associated with the original account.

I want to use a different email address or phone number to sign in

You can use any email address or phone number you have listed as a
username to sign in to your Microsoft account. If you want to sign in
with a specific one or change the one you're signing in with, here's
how:

Sign in to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft with your Microsoft account. If you’re having issues signing in to your
Microsoft account, go to Microsoft account help.

Note You may be prompted to enter your Microsoft account password, or
to enter a code sent to the email address or phone number listed in
your account's security information. By providing this info to us, we
know the request is coming from you.

If you want to use an existing email address or phone number, go to step 6. If you're adding a new email address or phone number, go to
step 3.

If you selected Add a phone number, go to step 5. If you selected Add email, choose whether to add:
a. A new email address. Select Create a new email address and add it as an alias, and then follow the instructions.

b. A non-Microsoft email address (such as an @gmail.com or @yahoo.com email address). Select Add an existing email address as a Microsoft
account alias, and then select Add alias.

After you've added the email address, you'll be asked to verify that you're the account owner:

a. Select Verify next to the new alias. A message is sent to the account for verification.

b. After you receive the message, select the included link to confirm that you own the account.

a. Select your country from the list.
