  1. Cannot Complete Scannow in Command Prompt

My Windows 10 computer has been freezing/crashing frequently recently (HP Pavilion 500-123ea). I got some good advice via this forum to try running the sfc/scannow diagnostic process to try to resolve the problem. However it gets up to about 56% and I get an error message: 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation'. And there's no elaboration beyond that, so I don't really know what's going on. The computer is continuing to freeze/crash in Word alone (no Web) and while browsing eg on Yahoo, Yahoo Mail etc. I've run PC Health Advisor software which suggests it's not fragmentation, nor RAM, nor registry issues, and the monitor looks OK.

This might seem like an obscure problem, but I think if it could be resolved it might help stop my system from crashing, so I don't know, has anyone come across anything like this before. I should add that I tried 'Dism' and that's OK. Any insights would be appreciated.

    :)

    notepad.exe gone

Open a Command Prompt window as Administrator, run this command and let the command complete fully, then restart your system:

    sfc /scannow

    That's It!

Windows 10 isnt working... it seems to not be able to find any files to use.

Hi Resney, please try the following

Open a Command Prompt window as Administrator

(click your Start Button, type cmd, right click the result and choose 'Run as Administrator)

    Run the following command:

    chkdsk C: /f

Let that command complete, then run this command:

    sfc /scannow

Let that command complete, then close Command Prompt and restart your PC

If you cannot access command prompt from inside Windows:

Start PC, just as the manufacturers logo disappears and Windows attempts to load, press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

    Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt . . . etc.

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Command Prompt and run the above commands

Did you run the sfc as an admin? Probably did. Its probably a hardware problem and as I said earlier , HP upgrading from an earlier version clashes with 10 in some instances.
JD, try what I suggested earlier , go into programs and uninstall HP support assistant and HP framework and then go into the c drive thru This PC and open the drive and go to HP and open that folder and open the HPQWare folder and open that and go to the HPSetup folder and open that and delete whats in that hpsetup folder.
Reboot the system and check your graphics driver and make sure your using the Intel driver instead of the one MS downloaded.
I wont bother you anymore. You will not screw up your system by deleting what I told you. You can always go back using system restore. If it works great, if it doesn't no harm done. But it did work for me . Also don't use that PC Health adviser. best of luck

    jdcallison89,
    Give this a try.................
Right click at the Start button > select Command Prompt (Admin) > at the flashing prompt, copy and paste this ( please use copy and paste to avoid typo )........

    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    > press Enter.

It will take quite a while. Please be patient and wait.
If it is completed, it will give you a report.
    Please post back the result.

  6. Thanks for this. I did run the Dism yesterday. The end result was the comment 'The component store is repairable. The operation completed successfully.' However when I went back to sfc/scannow this process would not complete and halted at 56% with the message 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation' so I am quite puzzled. Still quite unclear why this is happening and continue to have freeze/crashing problems, but I appreciate your suggestion.

You might say I am crazy. But, it has been known that one has to run the sfc 3 times or more.

Disable your anti-virus program(s), then run sfc /scannow again.

    jdcallison89,

If all else fail, do a Repair Install otherwise known as In-place install.
Use one of the 2 links below and download the iso file.
    Media Creation Tool ( MCT ) :
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

    Tech Bench
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/techbench

    Using MCT as example................
Download the Tool and run it.
Then select Create installation media for another PC
That will begin downloading the ISO file to your computer.
When download is completed, RIGHT click at the ISO > click Mount > click Setup.exe.
That will begin installing Windows 10.
You have the choice of keeping settings, files and apps, or keeping nothing.
    No product key is required.
    Activation will be automatic.
