Windows 10: Cannot find and remove adware on computer after multiple methods

I seem to have attained adware on my computer that attempts to open my browser to a spam site. At the moment I have it so that none of my browsers are set as default so now I get a message at random times saying "How do you want to open this?" followed by a list of my browsers. From this, I know it's some file or program on my computer attempting to open itself but I have no idea where it is or how to get rid of it.​

I've seen several dozen suggested solutions to this problem and similar ones but none so far have worked for me.​

I have tried searching for any adware with my own security software (Kaspersky), which found none.


I have tried both malwarebytes and hitman pro.


I had completely uninstalled what was at the time my default browser to make sure it wasn't a problem with that (the adware would then just open whichever browser I then made my default one).


I have checked my Programs and Features list under control panel and removed the programs downloaded within a week prior to getting these issues (they were just two games purchased, downloaded, and installed via Steam).

One person found for them it was a program masquerading as Windows Problem Reporting x84 and found and deleted it via task manager. I have not found any program/process by that name or of a similar name through my task manager.

I have tried turning off all of my start-up programs via task manager, and all (other than Microsoft services) under System Configuration.


I'm certain I have tried other methods to fix this issue, but after trying so many I have forgotten some.


There does not seem to be any kind of trigger for the "How do you want to open this" message. Sometimes it pops up a few minutes after logging in, sometimes it doesn't come up until I've been logged on for several hours. Sometimes it comes up once, then not again for the rest of the session, other times it repeatedly comes up as often as every minute. Sometimes I even have an entire day or days without it popping up.
