  1. Cannot format WD 1TB HDD

I bought a new WD 1TB HDD and was running install/format when I had a power outage.
When power came back I could not format this drive.
The drive shows in Device Manager but fails format there and every where I have tried.
I used UBDC and have not been able to format in any of the Partition tools.
    Computer Management/Disk Management shows:
    Volume: E
    Layout: Simple
    Type: Basic
    Filesystem: RAW
    Status: Healthy (Active, Primary Partition)
    But its not formatted.
I have been trying to format as NTFS.
I have deleted the partition and created it several times.
    What next?
    Thanks,
    Frank

    :)

  2. "Clean Install" Windows 10

Ok. I bought another HDD, the WD My Passport Ultra, 1TB. I am backing it up right now, through WD Backup that came on the drive. Should I be okay? Thanks!

Windows 10 is beginning to kill multiple number of brand new WD HDDs on my PC recently, which had no such problems at all before.

Windows 10 is beginning to kill multiple number of brand new WD HDDs on my PC recently, which had no such problems at all before.

    Hi,

I'm suffering from the same problem with punkpatio now.

I've been using Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 10 Pro after upgrade well without problem.

But, about the time when the Windows 10 1 year anniversary upgrade was applied,

I'm having great troubles with my PC.

    1) WD Blue 1TB HDD (internal) suddenly produced multiple bad sectors without any malware infection.

The WD Blue 1TB HDD was used only for data storage and my booting partition is Plextor M6Pro 256 GB SSD.

    2) Even when I backed up every data on WD Blue 1TB to a brand new WD Black 1TB HDD (internal), same issue had occurred within 1 week. Windows 10 does not recognize G: (WD Black 1TB) sometimes and the HDD test sometimes report 'too many bad sectors'.

    3) The number of small icons for loaded programs after booting located on right bottom of the desktop screen reduced from 8 to 4.

    4) I tried recovery with diskimage which I prepared today after clean installation of Windows 10 and every possible update for various drivers. After recovery using diskimage recovery, the number of small icons task bar(?) restored to 8 and the G: drive
is well recognized for a while. But after I run HDD SCAN and WD DataLifeGuard Diagnostics for my G: (WD Black 1TB internal HDD) multiple times to see if there is any bad sector and error in my HDD, G: drive is sometimes not recognized and the number of small
icons loaded decreases to 4. And also the PC vaccine program (Ahnlab's V3 365 Clinic) is not properly loaded after PC boot up.

I think it is not a matter of individual HDD but rather it would be a software problem.

And because I had not installed any complex 3rd party programs, and my PC went well for several months after upgrade to Windows 10, I wonder it would have been related with recent update for Windows 10.

I think I'm wasting my time and hope Microsoft will have a deep look at this issue.

WD DataLifeGuard Diagnostics sometimes judges the WD HDDs have too many bad sectors and sometimes later OK without any obvious reason.

When I looked upon the default driver for Data Storage devices, the date of default driver was 2006-xx-xx, which I think is too old??

I hope Microsoft and WD would resolve this issue perfectly, because I'm thinking I should get away from Microsoft Windows 10 and WD HDDs.

    Cannot format WD 1TB HDD

Have you tried diskpart to see if appears there, you can also use diskpart to clean the drive ready for initialising.

    • Command prompt w/ administration rights.
      • Type in "DiskPart" in command line.
      • Type in "list disk" in command line to show all disks in this machine.
      • Use "select" to set the focus to the specified partition.
        For example "select disk 1".
      • Use "clean" command to remove GPT disk from the current in-focus disk by zeroing sectors.
      • Go back to Disk Management, you can see GPT disk is "Not Initialized" now.
      • Within Disk Management, right click on disk info, choose "Initialize Disk", You can see GPT disk is "Unallocated" now.
      • Right click on disk info, choose "New Partition…", follow Partition Wizard and format it.

I've used UBCD/Ultimate Boot CD on occasion but mostly use the bootable GPARTED LiveCD to clear partitions and put the drive back to its as-shipped [from the manufacturer] condition. GPARTED uses a version of Linux as its OS.

Perhaps the Drive was locked when you had the power outage ? so was no unlocked when the format finished....

Did you ask on WD Forums?

I think MHHD is one Program that can potentially Unlock it again , I also use their HDD LowLevel Formatter Tool as well. I have used 4.5 version only of MHDD. (see older versions below)

    HDDGURU: MHDD

    and

Q: Can MHDD work with USB drives?
A: Theoretically yes. You have to find a driver which turns your USB device into SCSI (under DOS). Then MHDD can work with your device in SCSI mode. The driver is located here: http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/ ... OS-Driver/
There is also a very good boot floppy disk available here:
    http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/ ... Boot-Disk/

and see the Security Commands here

    http://hddguru.com/software/2005.10.....html#password

    BASICALLY HERE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS:

MHDD 4.5 = still need the password to UNLOCK, but it tells you everything you need to know about the state of the locked drive. Run from a bootable ISO cd or USB key. DONT USE VERSION 4.6 that is in Hiren’s Boot CD. GOOGLE AND FIND VERSION 4.5. Google the file mhdd32ver4.5.iso, and create a bootable cd or usb out of it.

    1. plug the drive into an older sata motherboard computer if possible.
    2. set your BIOS sata controllers to the most NATIVE and non AHCI or RAID mode you can. ( use IDE)
    3. Boot to your mhdd iso cd that you created. This sets the DOS environment and memory manager and stuff.
    4. MHDD -> press Shift+F3 and choose your drive. if its not listed then either edit \mhdd\cfg\mhdd.cfg to enable the controllers or use another computer/motherboard/controller.
    5. MHDD -> Press Shift+F2 to view the drive properties, it should say LOCKED if so.
