  1. Cannot initialize 2nd harddrive: The Request could not be performed because of an I/O...

First, I backed up all of the folders on both hard drives of my old Windows 7 machine to several USB Flash Drives.

I took the second hard drive out of my old Windows 7 desktop, and installed and hooked it up in my new Windows 10 Desktop. I went to "Disk Management" where I am prompted to initialize the disk see figure 1. So I do, and then I just get a pop-up saying: "The Request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". figure 2

I looked this up, and there are a number of sites indicating that a solution involves downloading something to fix it, but whenever I go to download whatever fixer is offered, I get a warning from security software, indicating that the site is disreputable.

I removed the second hard drive from my new Windows 10 machine, and put it back into my old Windows 7 machine, and it it worked fine. I then moved it back in to my new Windows 10 machine, and for a few hours, it worked fine. It even had the same drive letter as it did on the old windows 7 machine. Then, it stopped working and again it is the same with the same errors.

There really is no way that the cables can be hooked up incorrectly, is there?

This additional hard drive is 500GB. If buying a new one would fix the issue, I can do that, since I can restore all of the data from the USB flash drive. But if the drive is not the issue, I would hate to buy a new drive to have the same issue, especially if something else will make it work.

I tried updating the driver, but it says that the latest drivers are all installed.

    The drive is a 500GB Western Digital WD5000AAKS - 00A7B2

What needs to be done to make this work?

I/O device error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

I am currently using Windows 10 on my laptop, Asus A450L.

I tried to open my pendrive, but an error message came out, saying that "F is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

I was searching the Internet to find the solution of it and came across with a suggestion to perform a disk check. So, I open my Command Prompt and typed chkdsk F:/ f. The result came out as "Cannot open volume for direct access".

Please let me know how can I fix the I/O error.

    Thank you.

My backup stubbornly refuses to run. I can't run the initial backup, therefore the file history backups don't run either. This has been an ongoing problem for quite some time. Suggestions I've received have not worked so far. Following is the problem
    and the failed resolution attempts:

    • I get this message from the Event Log:

Unable to scan user libraries for changes and perform backup of modified files for configuration C:\Users\Papa\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config

    • In another thread from July, someone suggested checking a particular service (I forget the name just now) is running. It is.

    • Two days ago a Microsoft employee suggested the following steps. These steps resulted in no change, still no backup:

    Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft community.

I suggest you to follow the below steps to start and stop the services “Windows backup” and “volume shadow copy” and check if it helps.

    • Press “Windows+R” and in the run command box type “services. MSc”.
    • Search for the service “Windows Backup” double click on it and check whether the service is started or not, click on “OK” button. I suggest you to stop and start the service again.
    • Once done again search for the service “Volume shadow copy” double click on it and check whether the service is started or not. I suggest you to stop and start the service again, click on “OK” button and
check whether you can perform backup successfully.
Hope this information was helpful and do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.

    • I performed these steps multiple times. The backup still crashes, with the same error message. In addition I collected the following error message, but only one time:

Unable to start a backup cycle for configuration C:\Users\Papa\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config

    Event ID: 200

    • Can anyone help me with this stubborn problem?

    Thank you in advance.
