Windows 10: Cannot open ANY .exe file

Hi all,


Sorry for the style. I’m on my phone.


So today I installed Emacs from gnu.org, and opened my first .sml file. Later I tried to open the .sml by double click it and I think I chose Emacs to open it. Then suddenly a console prompts out and it changes all of the icons to Emacs Chrome, Steam, Atom, etc. Ubuntu still looks likr Ubuntu but i cannot open it either. I can open old Word/tex files. Looks like it only has trouble with .exe.

What I have done:

I deleted all the Emacs files and reset the Microsoft Store. Now those icons looks like white files. When i click on them, it says “You’ll need a new app to open this .exe file”.


I have restarted the computer and nothing changes.
I have updated Win 10.


Note: I cannot open cmd and it says “cmd.exe Application not found”. I can open gpedit.msc, if that matters.

Cannot open any exe file

Hello Community,

Something wrong happened while changing properties of a file in C:\WINDOWS. Now I cannot run any exe file anymore, cannot run regedit and cannot open Task Manager.

I have gone through several suggestions on this platform for similar problem faced by other users, but none of the suggested methods has worked because I simply cannot open any file. Even the msp file does not run when I try to update Acrobat software. I
guess I will not be able to apply other updates.

I therefore urgently need help to solve this problem. I am using Dell Laptop Latitude E5250 (64 bit) and Windows 10 Pro version 1607.

[SOLVED] Cannot open .exe files

The clean boot needs an exe file to work, so therefore I can't do one!!!

Any other ideas that do not need a exe file?

Please reply to the questions mentioned below in order to assist you in a better way.

• Did you make any changes prior to the issue?
• What is the complete error message that you get?
• Is the issue specific to opening .exe files?

I would request you to place the computer in clean boot and then check if the .exe files can be opened.

Perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

Please revert if you still find error while opening the .exe files.
