Windows 10: Cannot read SD memory card

Hello. I have a refurbished Dell laptop running Windows 10. This laptop is equipped with a variety of ports and should be a huge asset.
today I shot some photos on my Nikon D5100 SLR. once done, I removed the SD card and put it into the SD card reader on the side of the laptop. When the card is inserted, and explorer window immediately pops up along with an error window asking me to insert a device to drive E: (this is the drive attached to the SD card reader). It will not read the card.
I opened the Device Manager and can see the SD card. I have not reformatted the SD card because I was to keep the photos on it. Instead, I inserted another SD card into the read. Same error.
When I try to format this card (has nothing on it), I receive another error, whether I use FAT or NTSC.
Why is this happening? why can I not reformat the second SD card, and is this necessary to read the first SD card (with the photos?)
Is this community that can help me with this, or am I in the wrong place?

Phone is not reading the SD card.

There is a possibility that the SD memory card corrupted. Please try to perform a Scan Disk maintenance on it by following the steps below:

• Turn off your phone and remove the SD card. Use a SD card reader and plug it in to your computer.
  
• Open Computer by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Computer.
• Right-click the SD card drive that you want to check, and then click "Properties".
  
• Click the "Tools" tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
  
• Put a check mark on the "Automatically fix the file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".
• Click Start.
  • Wait for the Scan Disk process to complete, then mount your SD memory card back to your phone.

What is the model of your Asus computer?

I suggest you to open Device Manager (by running devmgmt.msc command) after plugging the card. If you see your memory card listed there as unknown device, right click it and select Uninstall. Unplug card, reboot and re-plug.
