Cannot rename file ... yet shows as renamed.

I have no idea how to search for this.
Copying the folder to a different HDD still inherits the same problem in that another location.

I have a HDD (GCannot rename file ... yet shows as renamed. :) from another computer. On it, there was a backup of my pictures.
    The folder is located g:\pictures.
I renamed it to "pictures to do".
It shows as "pictures to do" in the folder.
Yet, if I go to make another folder entitled "pictures", my system reports there is already a folder present named "pictures" and if i would like to merge them.
But there is no folder named "pictures", only "pictures to do".
I then created a folder entitled "pictures to do" and ... it made a second folder named "pictures to do".
Thus I had two distinct folders in the same root folder named "pictures to do"
I want to rename this folder.
In the command line, it is listed as "Pictures".
copying it to another HDD as I mentioned earlier presented the same problems on that HDD.

This is extremely irritating and I can only imagine microsoft has done something in the background that I cannot see and they have no interest in making it easily accessible.

    I have removed all sharing.
I have stripped the files of any residual ownership or access, except the default System and Administrator USERS and my Administrator account, which I am presently logged into while doing this.

    My system is running:
    Win 10 Pro 64x 1903

    - - - Updated - - -

I do not understand this still, but once I discovered the command line listed it as "Pictures", I simply renamed it via the command line to "pictures to do" and then created a folder named "pictures".

The issue is still perplexing though... why would it not change the name, but yet show in explorer that the name was changed?

    :)

  3. File renamer utility?

Is there a good file renamer utility that's safe to use anyone could recommend? I used to use Gizmo's list for app suggestions but this particular application has not been reviewed in several years, so I don't know if those apps are safe to use or not.

I have many files I need to rename but keep the individuality of the names. For instance, I need to rename all files in a particular folder from yyyy.mm.pdf to AMEXyyyy.mm.pdf keeping the yyyy.mm data unique. Another folder has a ton of files that need to be renamed from yyyy.mm.pdf to Visayyyy.mm.pdf.

I had all this figured out a month or so back but have already forgotten how I did it using an arcane script in either cmd prompt or powershell, I can't remember which. And now I'm drawing a blank how to do it. Again. smh. So I thought a nice freeware file renamer might help me out.

    Trouble renaming photos and files

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

    - Are you using Photo app to rename the photos?

    - Did you try renaming the photos directly from File explorer?

    - Do you get any message?

I suggest you to rename photos from File Explorer and check if it helps:

Follow the steps to rename photo from File Explorer:

    1. Right click on the start menu and select File Explorer.

    2. Click on pictures present on the left side of the page.

    3. Right on the picture you want to rename and select the option rename.

Help us with more information to assist you further.
