    Hi,

    I created a local account on my laptop which I had to bring to a repair shop for a keyboard problem; they changed the keyboard. After getting it back, I wanted to switch back to my Microsoft account. I went to "change account settings" and then "sign in with a Microsoft account instead". I got the usual sign in process username, password and code verification to my mobile phone, as I have two-step verification on, and then I get a screen that says "Sign into this computer using your Microsoft account" ... We'll need your current Windows password one last time." That's the step I cannot get past. My normal password which I successfully entered in the step before doesn't work. I then checked support options and assumed that it may be because I have two-step verification on and need an app authenticator password. So I went to "More security options" and then "Create a new app password" but the password which I then get and copy-paste in that screen, is also not accepted.


    So what do I do now? Reset my account? Turn off two-step verification? Turn off all existing apps? Create a new app password? Remove existing app passwords? I simply don't know which is the right action to take now. I have multiple devices and I would hate to have all my devices being affected if I change something on that particular laptop.


    I tried contacting support talk to a person which also doesn't work; it just leaves you in the cold, not even in a waiting line but simply stops responding after saying there are longer waiting times than usual I wouldn't mind waiting longer but I'm not even added to a waiting line, the Contact us window simply doesn't connect to anything further.


    So hopefully someone can help me in this forum. Many thanks in advance!

    Local Account password changed to Online Account Password

    Hi,

    I suggest you to follow the steps on how to switch from Microsoft account to Local account:

    • Click on search in taskbar and type account.
    • Click on Accounts.
    • Now, under Your account, click on Sign in with Local account instead.
    • Enter your Microsoft account password for confirmation and then follow the screen instruction.
    • Enter User name credentials for your the Local account and click OK.
    • Now, login to Local account.

    It sounds like this is at step 7 in the tutorial below where it's asking you to enter your local account's password one last time.

    local account unable to switch to MS account

    That's ok. When you get to step 7 above, you would just leave it blank.

    When you successfully switch to a Microsoft account, it will use the password of your Microsoft account.
