Windows 10: Cannot Type in Search Boxes Explorer/Start...

I have an unusual issue where I cannot type anything into Windows search boxes.
Specifically the built in 'Search' in the explorer windows, and the 'Start' menu search doesn't show when typing.

However I can search in the Control Panel.

Also, to confound this issue further if I 'copy/paste' text, I can enter the clipboard text if I right-click and "paste" into the explorer search box.

The issue seems to be not registering input from my keyboard for the search boxes exclusively.


I can enter text in every other circumstance I have tried, just not into the Windows Search menus.


The diagnostic tells me that the Windows Search isn't working and claims to fix it but the troubleshooter doesn't fix my problem.

I still cannot search via conventional means.


This is a relatively new issue, as I know I have been able to search in the past.


And to clarify, the input device I use is the built in keyboard of my laptop, I'm not using some elaborate external input device.

File Explorer search box

When I start to type into the 'search' box on File Explorer on the right side of the address bar, if I type at normal speed the first one or two characters do not appear or are overwritten as I type.

I have File Explorer set to automatically start in the 'search' box.

To enter in the 'search' box, I must enter ONE character or hit the space bar and then wait about a second for the display to stabilize before I can enter the remaining characters into the 'search' box. This delay or overtyping problem seems to have started
six or more months ago and I was hoping that future updates would correct this. I have not been able to locate any reference to this problem with numerous 'google' searches on the Internet. I suspect that it has something to do with the list of files that
now appears below the 'search' box as I type in the characters. It should NOT require multiple keystrokes to start a search in File Explorer when set to automatically start in the 'search' box. Thank you!

Can't type in Cortana search box

Hi Brendon,

Is you keyboard working normally on other apps such as Notepad? If not, run the built in troubleshooter for your keyboard. Here are the steps:

• Type Troubleshoot in the Search box and press
  Enter.
• Look for and run the Keyboard troubleshooter.
• Follow the onscreen instructions.
