Windows 10: Cannot update to KB4038788 on new desktop

Hi, I've been having a problem with windows update as of late, I can get the update just fine but then after it reboots my PC attempting to install fails saying "fatal error something-something dll" and restarts my PC reverting me back it's so frustrating because on my laptop, it installed fine no issues but on my gaming PC which I am typing this from, it doesn't want to install, the update KB4038788. Please help the update fixer uper from here didn't work *Sad

My suggestion would be to wait.

MS has had quite a few problems with the .Net patch this month.

It might be [speculation here] that it will be replaced with a newer version.

Have you tried this :




Download the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter package now.

It's for blocking updates But, it also serves as an installer.

Thanks for the reply Flashborn, I will try out the tool you gave me, I thought I was alone in this because it's pretty strange for an update to fail like this and fall back on and annoyingly keeps downloading itself. I was told to do in-place update but I can't without it wiping my OS drive that contains my game save data and other registry settings that I don't want to go through again and do them all over again.

There's also an in-house troubleshooter for that. Open Settings app > Choose "Update & security > Choose "Troubleshoot" > Choose "Windows Update" > Click on it and choose "Run the troubleshooter".

 

Yeah that was the first thing that came to mind and did, but didn't do anything besides restarting and throwing up the error and back to couldn't install updates reverting back message

 

I can understand your concern but, you should have a back up
of your HDD if it's this important to you.

My Windows 10 install is on my SSD which is my boot drive with my other drives are for storage and games strictly.

 

I see. You could try and install it directly from the MS Update Catalogue. Make sure you pick the correct one.

You know that even if your games are on other HDDs, the games still make use of your Windows installation right?

So, if you should lose your OS SSD then, your games will also not work even if they are installed on the other HDDs.

My suggestion would be to install your games on the SSD which will make them faster to boot and should make
them run faster. You will only get a few frames per second faster but, you would have everything in the same place which
would make it allot easier to restore should something happen.

Skidrow has a good suggestion about the Update Catalog. Try that first.

But, you might want to clean the OS first with the internal cleaner. "Disc Cleanup"

Then, download and try to install the update manually.

In addition, I find this to be the best Disk Cleanup:

Open Admin Command prompt. Check all the boxes you deem necessary. (I don't check any error logging) Copy/paste command below and press enter. Do not close the command window until all the taskbar flashing little windows have stopped.

%SystemRoot%\System32\Cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

 

Also, just to be on the safe side, after cleaning up the disc, run a malware scan.

If you have Defender run it and if you have MalwareBytes' run that too.

AdwCleaner would also be a good option. Only takes a few minutes for peace of mind.

Now, I'm more at peace with an update.

Also, sometimes any AV running, including Defender, while updating can hinder an update. I would advise not to open a browser while having AV off.
