Windows 10: Can't activate my OEM Licence

I have trouble to activate my OEM Licence.


I have built my new PC and ordered a Windows 10 Pro OEM Licence. Since I don't have an optical drive for the DVD, I used the Media Creation Tool and made a USB-installation. However, when trying to activate my licence key which I have on my DVD package, it says the key is invalid. This happens both upon installation and later when trying to activate once the OS is installed.


Do I have to install using the DVD when it is an OEM licence on my newly built PC?

Windows 10 OEM licence and activation

I have several questions the licence and activation:

Can you legally buy used (and decactivated) windows 10 OEM licences and use them with a PC different from what it was supplied with?

Lets assume I bought such licence and the activation was successful on such a machine - does it mean I can continue and legally use the OS?

I read that there was a 'system builder' clause when using OEM licences that lets you transfer said licences to different machies if you take the OEM responsibility on yourself.

If it's not possible with windows 10 OEM is it possible with any other OEM version of windows such as windows 7 or 8?

Activation vs. OEM key

The difference between a full Retail licence and an OEM licence is, a Retail licence can later be transferred to a new motherboard or PC, an OEM licence once it is activated on a motherboard, it is locked to that motherboard and cannot be transferred.

If you are going t purchase a Windows 10 licence, it is much better in the long term to purchase a full retail licence, it is a bit dearer than an OEM licence, but will work out much cheaper in the long run . . .

Typically used OEM licences will not activate on another system, since they are tied to the original motherboard of the system they were originally installed and activated on . . .

If you could get that to activate on another system, then there is not reason why you could not continue to use it on that system, but I doubt you will get it to activate . . .
